1. Not all 1.9td's had an intercooler

2. The 'grab handle' is actually to retain newspapers/documents etc...
Which 1.9TD didn't have the intercooler? Is it the 1.9SD?
There was a 1.9 Diesel with no turbo early on.

Anti-sink was introduced quite early on, some of the "chevron on bonnet" Xantias had it.

The 1.9SD isn't a turbo diesel!!! the non turbo 1.9 was available up to the end of Xantia production... The early 1.9 turbo diesel was available with and without intercooler....

The SD did have a turbo, albeit a light pressure one. The atmo 1.9D was phased out as it couldn't meet emission regulations and was superceded by the lpt SD. There was the 1.9 litre DW8, a development of the atmo XUD, but it wasn't fitted to the Xantia.

I've never seen a 1.9 Turbo D Xantia without an intercooler, I thought they were all 92 bhp?
The only UK spec Xantia turbo diesel without intercoolers were the SD's as far as I know.

To help clear this up;

1.9D Xantia's were non turbo engines producing 71 BHP.

SD were light pressure turbo engines producing 75 BHP.

TD's up until about 1996 prduced 92 BHP after which a cat was fitted which reduced power to 90 BHP.

Re the earlier mentioned Temptation (LX) Desire (SX) special edition's, VSX models were sold as 'Athena'. All of there were sold at a reduced price to clear old stocks with the introduction of the facelift model.

That's where the confusion lies.

The majority consensus is...

Very early Mk1 had chevrons on the bonnet and no anti sink.
Later Mk1 had chevrons on the grille and antisink.
Mk2 is from the 1998 facelift onward.

Close, but no cigar

There is in no connection between chevrons on the bonnet and lacking anti-sink.. my Dad's 1994 has Chevrons on the bonnet but does have Anti-sink.

The Xantia first came out in 1993, Anti-sink came out in 1994, Chevrons moved from the bonnet to the grill in 1995, (also the speedo changed from cable drive to electronic at the same time) and the Mk II with the facelift front (and lots of other changes) came out in 1998 :)

Simon

The chevrons moved to the grille in July 1994 (ie 1995 model year) on UK Xantias, although the older type continued to be sold along side it for a while. There was a fair bit of overlap, there are "later" cars registered on L plates and "earlier" cars on M plates!

Us 205GTi owners have a similar conundrum with the various model Phases.

It is recognised there are Phase 1 models, Phase 1.5 models and Phase 2 models. There is also a Phase one and three quarter, of which mine is!

Perhaps we should think of calling an early Xantia without anti-sink, airbag and bonnet chevrons a MK1, then the model with anti-sink, an airbag and grille chevrons etc. a MK1.5 and the "facelift" a MK2.

OK, I'll get my coat...
