But then the filters would not get cleaned

What it needed was a decent design in the first place. A drain plug and filters that could be removed without disturbing the pipe manifold would have been a good start

The handbrake problem is now sorted as of last night. Seems to have been a combination of things including a semi-seized cable now holds like a good 'un.
I also checked up on my service record and it appears that the LHM fluid has never been changed at all. I had a look at it and it is indeed yellow but clear. So it looks like this is my next job. Has anyone used "Comma LHM Plus" at all or is it a job for the "Total LHM"?
Thanks for all the help and replies.
Cheers

GSF do 4l of Total LHM+ for something like £20, they also do hydraflush for around £17
I bought 5l of LHM+ from them to make sure the brakes are bled fully, and to give me the remainder as a top up just incase.

Flushed and changed the LHM fluid and when I checked the service record it had not been done at all and I now have 92K on the clock. It did not however cure the heavy steering problem which has now been diagnosed by my local Citroen specialist as a semi seized steering column universal joint which I must admit sounds about right. Ah well nothing lost as the LHM was definitely needing changed. The guy has quoted me about 1.5 hours labour to change the joint which also sounds about right to me.
Thanks to all who contributed ideas

We had a partially siezed universal joint on the other half's old fiesta.

When I changed it, it made a hell of a difference. It was like adding power steering to the car!

The fiesta was prone to the failure because the exhaust was so close to the steering column. Easy enough to get at the joint on the Xantia - you can get at one of the bolts from under the wheel arch with a long extension the other from underneath.

Update to this is that the Citroen specialist was indeed spot on. New column U/J fitted and steering is back to like new. I had a look at the old U/J and it is fine in one plane but almost solid in the other hence the tightening up as you increased lock. You live and learn at least the LHM fluid has now been changed after 6.5 years.
