The accumulator diaphragm could have ruptured since it was checked.
If so, you will not hear a "hiss" before the click occurs.
The hiss is the pump filling the accumulator.

The NR ball must be present as there would be no click - that is what makes the click noise

A missing pressure release ball is possible.

I'd try seeing what comes out of all the return pipes - anything more than just drips is suspect.

Hi all, thanks for your answers.

Firstly, the brake pedal noise is just a soft squelching with a vague, slow pulse under heavy braking - I believe this to be quite normal. Normal braking is fine.

I made the simple tests last night: no movement at all from the car when the engine is off. Sitting in the back doesn't bring me back up; moving the height selctor to highest (from normal after engine cut) doesn't budge.
Certainly the hiss (or rather the whooshing sound, like a cork coming out of a bottle or someone standing on a frog) happens before every click (the click is not loud; quite discreet...) I know the Regulator is cycling because if you feel the LHM inlet pipe at the bottom of the unit, it pulses in unison with the sounds.

I'll be checking the ball and return pipes this weekend....

Cheers

If you get a face full of LHM or it sprays out weakly - you'll have found your problem - the accumulator is flat.

That short noise you describe sounds very like the one my BX made when the accumulator ruptured its diaphragm.

Yep Jeremy,

I was aware of that little 'surprise'. The Acc sphere has been off the car three times in as many weeks, but each time is only get a little squirt - basically I think this is the contents of the void between the valve of the sphere and the ball in the Regulator, given just a little residual pressure in the system.

It is not, by any means, a great rush whereby 30+ bars are looking to escape....

Steve
The indistinct click could mean that the NR ball port has some crud jamming the ball open - a bit of old pipe seal in LHM?

Brand new LHM in complete system last weekend.....

I'm fastidious about crud getting into the system when it comes to hydraulics.... :) .

Gotta try checking those return lines, I think....
