ok, we tried adbot 2007 i got two things but on her machine nothing bad

we tried command prompt
message from attempt at google was same as below (also tried bbc)

C:\>ping www.bbc.co.uk
Ping request could not find host www.bbc.co.uk. Please check the name and try again.

tried https site and no joy. Couldn't try SAFE mode with networking as ran out of time

when she first pinged, she noticed an error message in top corner of screen mentioning firewall but didn't have enough time to read it completely.

Sound like firewall is blocking access and skype can bypass it?
I haven't really got a clue about firewalls, really :?

Ok from command prompt (cmd)
Type:

ipconfig /all

That will list your ip address configuration and help us find out if the computer is getting its settings properly.

It should look something like:

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3
k Connection
Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-18-DE-27-D5-30
Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes
Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.3.25
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.3.1
DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.3.1
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.3.1
Lease Obtained. . . . . . . . . . : 12 April 2007 18:56:06
Lease Expires . . . . . . . . . . : 15 April 2007 18:56:06

Although she'll have different IP address numbers.
Actually when you post the results, a word of advice, blank out the last octet (the numbers after the 3rd . in your ip address so in my case 192.168.3.** instead of 192.168.3.25)

Hmm,

192.168.1.1 is the default internet connection sharing ip address.
Is that what her DNS server and default gateway are set to?
Is it also what her IP address is, or is her IP address 192.168.1.somethingotherthan1?

As they're private ip addresses (meaning they aren't accessable directly via the net) what is her full:

IP address
Default Gateway
DNS server
1.9TD+ SX Xantia Estate (Cassy) running on 100% veg
1.9TD SX Xantia Hatchback (Jenny) running on 100% veg for sale

There was a trojan around which would change the local hosts file - which is refered to before DNS checks for ip addresses.

So this way, the trojan could "take over" common websites by redirecting you to other sites - and perhaps these "other" sites have now been shut down.

Go into the command prompt ( cmd ) as above, then have a look at the hosts file using EDIT ( ie. EDIT HOSTS ) - but this needs to be done from the following directory

c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc

so, you need to do this..

Start->Run->Cmd (press enter )
c: (press enter)
cd \windows\system32\drivers\etc (press enter)
edit hosts (press enter)

Hosts will have comment lines at the top ( starting with # ), and then it should have one line showing

127.0.0.1 localhost

Any other lines are not essential ( although may be used ) - if you see more than one or two lines in here, especially to common site names, then it's possible you have that trojan ( you can delete the lines safely, save the file, virus scan, check the file again etc.. ).

Be aware that sometimes the automatic update name for common virus scan programs is put in here - but with the trojan address so that your anti-virus does not get updated ( updating would allow detection - smart move by the writers :? )

from a command prompt

ping 212.58.226.33 which is new.bbc.co.uk

see if you get a reply ( four lines saying reply from... )

If yes, then general communications is fine, think of it as the phones working but directory enquiries is down.

If no, then post the response you get.

If she's running the Windows forewall it can be disabled from the control panel.

Of course Norton may be the problem - I threw it out as the thing wrecked my old computer (Waste of £50 or something) and removed it from this one as its expensive and kept displaying silly messages to make me think its actually doing something.

Exactly what I did to my wife's computer.
She was so frustrated about those Norton messages every now and then - not understanding what they meant. Above all it degraded the computer substantially.

John, I've just re-read this whole thread - and I stumbled over the fact that you do not mention that you have checked the WindowsXP network setup.
This you reach from :
Rightclick other computers (network) -> options -> rightclick any named connection you see -> options -> new window
here you should see at least these 3 services installed :
client for microsoft network
file and printer sharing
TCP/IP services

At least you should have the same services installed on both computers.

highlight TCP/IP services, then click the options button
everything here should be set to "get automatic"
do NOT specify any DNS or DHCP servers.
What happens is that windows in this setup will issue a DHCP request (the address 000.000.000.000) out on the network connected to. Any DHCP server listening will immediately wake up and respond with the necessary IP adressing details sent back.

If it still doesnt work - then its your router, modem or whatever internet connecting device you have that does not respond, or will not allow a transparent DHCP request sequence.
You might then have to interrogate this device to check its setup, as it could be lost somehow.
Look in the CD documentation files that came with your device.
