One of the pics in Ross's link shows a hydropneumatic system! Presumably, they used a diagram from the wrong car...

The reason that the catalyst is closer to the engine is simply to allow it run hotter. A metre of exhaust pipe cools the exhaust gas significantly, so if you can bolt it direct to the manifold all the better. It also has the side effect of acting as a silencer inside the engine bay, it makes the car quieter too. They could probably acheive the same effect by lagging the exhaust but they've decided to do it this way instead.
