Checking timing 1.9TD

See if this makes any sense:-
Years ago I had a Chrysler Alpine 1.3. The starter motor went faulty so I took it off and cleaned it, including cleaning the carbon from between the segments on the comutator. When I put it back together and tried to start the engine the starter motor turned over really fast. Much faster than it should.
I'd created a short on the comutator such that the starter motor pulled more current than normal and developed much more torque than usual, reslutling in the engine turning over like it was connected to a black and decker drill.
Could you have a starter motor fault ?

i cant beleive a 1.9 diesel, being jumped from my very long jump leads, could turn over too fast... anyway, still need to get starter off to access the flywheel lock (why did they fit the lowest starter bolt as an allen key , which you cant get anything decent on because the clutch-arm grr)

Could it possibly be carbon build up on the valves preventing them closing properly?

I Managed to check the compression on mine by taking the glow plugs out and at first I tried a cheap petrol engine type tester with a rubber cone type end, this only read to IIRC about 200 psi, but it would give you an indication whether its making any compression on any of the cylinders or none of the cylinders. I would have thought other than a failure in the timing of the engine, to loose compression on all cylinders would be very unlikely??
Definatly worth taking the cam cover off and watching the engine turned over by hand, checking the valve clearances would give an indication to whether you have bent any???

I'm no expert on these engines, or any engines for that matter, but I used the glow plugs for the compression test because I think removing the injectors requires a puller and then new sealing washers. Regarding the valve clearance, I dont know what it should be, but it will be listed in a Haynes manual, if its more than stated certainly on the exhaust valves, I would guess that to be a good indicator of bent valves.

My 1.9TD had it's cambelt snap at 40mph on the M25.
Just needed a new cam and caps and it was fine.
The valves are in line with the piston so don't often bend.
Beautiful engine
Can even survive being flooded with water...

Hands on experience from my local gang here suggests that you simply have lost fuel supply.
Can happen abruptly if a brittle rubber hose cracks, or debree suddenly cloggs the fuel line internally.
Also water in fuel is a possibility.
For some strange reasons the engine may start spin like a B&D when no fuel is admitted.
I'm sure some members may have explanations on that ...
2 things before you throw away that nice Lion Estate :
1) any fuel admitted to the injectors ?
2) is it in fact fuel - not water ?
Edit : just received your mail with video.
Played it a couple of times playing with the sound volume to be sure.
TBH I cant hear anything abnormal comapred to other diesel non-starters ??
To me it spins like a common non-starter. No overly fast spinning.
And the cam is certainly not broken as it is clear from the video.
Make sure the 2 things above are tested thoroughly !
As I am really firmly convinced it is some kind of a fuelling problem !
Must be a primer pump somewhere ? detach the fuel pipe directly from inlet stud on pump - and prime some fuel out in a bowl or jar. Any water looks like pearls or jellylumps on the bottom of the fuel.
