that is most certainly something sizable thats been ingested and the mention of at least one nut or bolt would be right as the way those vanes have deformed i would say its probably taken out the journal bearing in the core of the turbo and possibly damaged the core too. Id certainly find the best used turbo you can as a replacement after checking the condition of the pistons.
See what the garage are willing to pay you to keep you quiet and if they offer nothing then trading standards are the next port of call. While your in the garage take the details of their liability insurance like policy number and company and maybe see about claiming thru them as i honestly think that would write off your car normally.

Ive been doing some looking stuff up ie looking for a replacement turbo and as far as i can tell an xud is an xud is an xud if you get my drift. So bits of one fit another give or take a few little variables. So correct me if im wrong a garrett turbo as fitted to my car will be the same as fitted to a 306 with a garrett? Im going some where with this such as http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... &rd=1&rd=1
But am I right in thinking the KKK turbo ive been offered has different mounts and not compatable unless i change lots of other bits(as well as being slightly poorer turbo overall)??
And while im at it the injectors of a 306 would be the same as in the 406? just thinking ahead of myself and considering getting some with less milage on, out of a 306.

I have a strange feeling that there are different elbows fitted to both the compressor and turbine ends between cars; might be safer to find a 406 one...
Injectors have to be matched to the manufacturer of the pump (at least I know they do on the pre-ECU ones), as well as enigne size. With post-ECU ones, it's a case of making sure you get the (expensive) injector with the lift sensor built in.

Injectors can be reconditioned - which is really cleaning up the nozzle and grinding it flat etc. Its a very specialised job but there are many independant firms who do loads of them and do a good job. You'll probably find that they will do the whole job for a very reasonable price.
May be worth a look in yellow pages.

Just a quick update spent most of the evening under the bonnet and theres now nothing in the cylinders. Managed to get the injectors off (well all but the one with a sensor in it) or the glow plug and turn it over by hand and then from the starter. So everything that side seems fine and one less things to worry about.
Now i know that its all good time to find a turbo and get it fitted

If i were you i wouldnt bother with used injectors. id just whip yours off and get them cleaned and tested. cost me £25 for the ones for our 2.1td(spare set i was given)
And for turbos go with the one that has the least play in the shaft if not no play. low milers might be good but one thats had a good service history and regular oil changes is usually better.
