How many microns do you need to filter too? I've noticed a few whilst surfing the Internet. I'm thinking that I'm going to mod my father's HDI now!!!rotodiesel wrote:An in-line filter is nowhere near fine enough to protect a high pressure diesel fuel pump. The Bosch unit as fitted to the VAG diesels is one of the best filters I've tested.

A good diesel filter will trap particles down to 3 microns in size. Few high pressure pumps will be damaged by contaminants smaller than this, although silicon carbides (lapping paste remnants) can sometimes give trouble. The water separation (agglomerator) function is also critical and pattern filters often let water through. The trick is to design the fuel flow through the can in such a way as to make all the water droplets stick together (agglomerate) and stay in the bottom of the can, regardless of the main fuel flow.
I have no doubt that all readers of this thread drain their fuel filters at each and every service, even if no water has ever been found. One day you'll be glad you did...
The best filters are made by a German manufacturer of diesel fuel systems based in Stuttgart.
