Phone a locksmith.
My mate has some little inflatable bags that he put in the door seal gap and when you inflate them it wedges the door without any damage. They can then retrieve the keys for you from the ignition.
It is worth a phone call as it might cost less and cause no mess.

A similar trick we used to use in the car yard was to get a tin of Contact adhesive, paint the window to be broken, paint plastic (the kind of stuff used under concrete - cheap and tough) or even material will do at a pinch, like an old sheet, and just give it a decent whack preferrably using a piece of board between the hammer and the glass so you don't end up with a hole about 2 inches across and 3000 slivers of glass all over the interior.wheeler wrote:Going through a windscreen aint that easy,it will smash ok but they are laminated so they are tough to get through, the screen is part of the structure of the car.deian wrote:coathanger trick won't work with deadlock, as they are also locked from the inside, i suppose you haven't got a spare plip?
what i would do, check you insurance small print, see if you have free insurance cover, and no claims protection, then smash the windscreen,
If you decide to put a window in cover the whole glass with sellotape before you smash it.you can then lift the glass out in a big peice & it minimises the mess.
Once you hear it break, carefully withdraw the plastic glued to the glass and you'll find about 70% stuck to it. Much of the other 30% will be progressively removed from various passengers anatomies over the next 6 months.

That's quite odd, I can get a new key to my 1995 model Xantia from the dealer in two days. All I need is the chassis number.tim leech wrote:Tried Citroen guys, as its over 10 years old they cant get me a key,as the records dont go back far enough!
I'm sorry that I can't help you, hope you can solve the problem.
I tried myself but cars in the uk anything over 10 years old the details are deleted apparently! Maybe as most of them have been scrapped by that time.

Trouble is, there's no quarterlights on a Xantia hatch!
I wondered if it would be possible to cut through the front door handle surround to get to the locking mechanism behind? I seem to remember this is only plastic & held on with one single bolt on a Xantia? I'm sure I've heard of thieves breaking into deadlocked Xantias using that method.
This bit would also be very cheap & easy to replace from a scrappie.

True but im no mehanic myself and dont like the idea of taking to the door handle with a drill but it is a consideration.

I appreciate that the lock mechanism itself is not in the handle, but the barrel for the key is.
This is the weakness in many of these car deadlocking systems, if you can fool the central locking system into thinking the key has been turned in the door lock barrel then it will un-deadlock all the doors for you anyway!
I've never tried this on a Xantia, but it was apparently a serious weakness on some VWs until quite recently - attack the connection on the back of the lock barrel and it would simply bypass the deadlocks and unlock the car.

I've never actually taken the trouble of reading the handbook regarding the
deadlocking so will be happy to be corrected here!! Don't these only work
with the plipper. How can they activate on their own!? A key in the doorlock
isn't going to activate the deadlocks...
Isn't it worth trying the coathangar through the doorframe gap before you start larruping sh!t out of things!?

The locks are shielded tto stop people doing just that so a coathanger wont help unfortuantly.

The key will certainly operate the deadlocks in my Xsara, pretty sure it did with the Xantia too but I don't have one to test it with anymore!andmcit wrote:I've never actually taken the trouble of reading the handbook regarding the

I've checked a 1994 model year Xantia handbook to see what the
deadlocking is supposed to do!!
The two button plipper activates/deactivates the normal locks via the
central locking. You ONLY get the deadlocking into operation by pressing
the second button (the one nearest the keyring metal loop) AFTER locking
the car with the first button!
I find it difficult to see how the DEADLOCKING procedure can activate
all on it's own. I wasn't kidding when I asked if the car is near ANOTHER
remote control signal that is actually activating the locking. Has this just
started happening since Xmas...
Little Johnny doesn't have a new remote control car/helicopter etc or
that new HD BIG LCD screen telly doesn't also lock/unlock your car as
well as operate your video...?

Sounds to me as if water has got in somewhere as I dont use the doorlocks, I always use the plip.
