I recently replaced the fuel pump on a TD Xantia, it was older than yours not having either the immobiliser or keypad and the swap was straightforward enough, I dont own a dial guage so I aligned the new pump with the dirty mark left by the old one, the car started straight off and runs as well as it ever did.

Apparently the dial gauge isn't foolproof even if you have one and a strong stand as the output pressure drops with old age - and so the injection doesn't quite happen when its supposed to. A touch more advance can help in this case and the thing will function for a long while longer.

Once I had swapped my pump it was set up to the dial gauge. I then marked the pump support bracket, undid the mounting bolts and pushed it forwards a couple of mm to advance it. It ran ok with a little more advance. Infact I played with it and advanced it until the engine sounded a little rough and then backed it off slightly.

Many thanks to Kev for supplying me with a free :D replacement injector pump.

I'm getting the feeling that I may have bitten off more than I can chew in fitting it myself though

I know it isn't essential to remove the cambelt to do this job but it's almost due anyway. I did change the cambelt myself 6 years ago. This time I can't get the crankshaft bolt out to remove the auxiliary pulley. (In 4th gear with 3/4" T-bar drive pulling under car towards front of car). Can someone please confirm that it unscrews anti clockwise. I have an air impact driver available tonight and don't want to be turning it the wrong way! Is there an easy way to lock the flywheel that doesn't involve taking the accumulator sphere off?!

Since last time I changed the cambelt, a garage has also changed it and they broke the lower cambelt cover into 3 peices. So I have been able to remove it all. Is it normal practice to just try and replace the cambelt with the auxiliary pulley still fitted?

Do I really need to remove the alternator and the cambelt tensioner to get the injector pump off? With people saying things like they've tried several different timing positions, I thought the mounting bolts would be fairly easy to get at.

My Xantia has aircon. Is this making things more difficult? (Hydraulic pump on top, Alternator in middle and Aircon pump at the bottom). What really needs to be removed to get the injector pump off?

Alan (With Xantia in lots of peices).

Certainly on XUD's you don't need to remove the crankshaft bolt or pulley. I had no problem with my BX TD - but that has a solid steel pulley and the rubber damped one may cause more problems - but then may not. I removed a small plastic cover which covers the bottom of the belt and the pulley -2 bolts and some waggling - and was able to get the belt in with a bit of gentle twisting. I understand that a number of other people have used this method.

There is no need to remove any pulleys - but of course the tensioner will need to be slackened - then carefully tensioned. The idler and the tensioner pulleys should be carefully checked for condition, as should the water pump - and the belt should be examined carefully for tracking - if its off to one side when you start - it may mean that a tensioner is collapsing - and for contamination as well.

Hi,
The crankshaft pulley bolt does come off like a normal bolt i.e. anti clockwise to undo.

Take a look at this thread to see my description of how I undid my bolt -

I finally have the Xantia cured and back on the road :D

Many thanks to KevMayer for donating a free :D diesel injector pump. My girlfriend has a hard time believing that people would take the time to give useful advice for free on the internet so I'm not sure what she makes of free car parts arriving as well

Changing the pump on a car with aircon was quite a task and there were times when I wish I'd got someone else to do it but once you have the suspension lowered and lots of stuff removed it isn't going anywhere so I had to continue until eventually it was done.

As Kev suggested, with this pump it isn't very powerful but my Xantia never has been so probably no change there. It appears to start easier than with the old pump so that's good.

I had hoped to do the timing with a digital vernier guage but there was nowhere near enough room. I thought about removing the oil filler to get more room but I didn't think that would be enough. So I reluctently just set it to the mark I'd drawn round the old pump. It appears to run ok.

I took the opertunity to change all the glow plugs, the water pump, timing belt and auxilary belt.

All is well now and I've just put the Ford Escort that I bought to tide me over up for sale! That Zetec engine runs very nicely but it gets through some fuel compaired with the Xantia.

I'll take the old diesel injector pump appart some time and see if I can find what its problem was.

Alan.
