Hi all,
Above has started to crunch slightly when changing into 5th. Sounds like its just clipping really. Can be avoided if I keep the gear stick pushed to the right whilst selecting 5th. Any ideas?
Also, anybody know of any specialists in Manchester?
5th gear crunch Xantia 2.0 HDI (90bhp) W reg

It could just be the gearchange linkage needs adjusting. After having the clutch replaced on my old Xantia TD it would hardly go into 5th at all, when it did the lever had to be forced and it crunched horribly. Took it straight back to the garage that had done the clutch, they adjusted the linkage in about 5 mins & it was fine after that.
By the way, the LHM has no effect on the clutch or gearbox on a Xantia.

Problem is most lilely to be the 5th gear selector fork worn.
Like most cars, the 5th gear is put into a case on it's own at the end of the gearbox, if the gearbox gets low on oil, 5th gear suffers.
As you have said, you have never checked the oil, I bet that the dealer hasn't either.
5th gear and it's fork is a very easy job to inspect and change, but first, check the gear oil level and top up if needed, this alone may sort it, if not too badly worn.
LHM has nothing to do with the clutch, the clutch will either be cable operated or hydraulic from it's own sealed unit system, depending on the model / year. But you should top up the LHM if the level is low!!

If it engages easily but crunches especially when cold, the synchro ring is wearing. If its anything like the CX gearbox you can take the end off under the n/s wing and get to it, only mine fired ball bearings all over the place when I took it apart but hopefully the Xantia one being more modern wont.
