XM 3.0 V6 SEi 92. Heater problem

Post by Andy B »

Hi Andrew.
The parts I intend to buy are from the listing you gave me in Germany.
I contacted the seller and he speaks English. He will send me the parts for £94.00. I think that is quite a good price as that is with postage. He also told me that the flap motor seldom gives trouble. If the wiring harness is faulty I was thinking of getting another one and if possible, unplug the old one and plug in the new one (sounds easy when you say it fast). Would not look forward to getting the whole dash out though.
Citroen garage gave me some diagrams of the system.
Just this second received this message from the German seller.

Hallo, yes i can confirm, that the parts will fit, they are equal at all Y3 Modells with electronic climatecontrol ( right word ??!! ) sometimes the small wirering part between the control panel and the fanmaotor etc... is the problem, it would cost 10.- euro, but i think yue schould try the other parts first. if the problem isnt gone after this, we should look again what to do.

Do not want to dump the car, so I must go for these parts.
I had a dream just then and in it I changed the control panel and all was well!

What do you think.

Kind regards

Andy

The seller certainly seems to know his way around Xm's judging by the parts
and cars he's selling, and he knows what to charge for the hard to get bits too!!
Sounds almost the same price for another complete Xm!!

The real thing to bear in mind, were you to swap the digital computer, is
that you may immediately alter the fan speed from full on/off, BUT your main
objective would appear to be to get the main flap gauging between cold and
hot air coming into the cabin. You can get at the motor IIRC, by working in
the nearside footwell - remove the central console side panel and the motor
should be visible into the main heater box. I MAY be getting my Cx's and Xm's
mixed up here, but either way, if you find and remove the motor,
you should be able to physically adjust the flap to at least offer you some heat
so you can live with the car on adaily basis!!

I'd certainly check this route before ebaying bits! :D

Hi Andrew
I do take your point but as I am quite lazy, I am looking for the easy option. Thinking that none of the flaps work it could be the flap motor failed or it is not getting the signal from the control panel. The fan motor works on full speed so that is not the problem.
As my car is getting as rare as rocking horse stuff the parts are very hard to find and the German prices are as good as most I have been quoted in England.
Never bought parts from Germany before but if I buy them and do not use them, I should get my money back when I no longer own an XM.
Also, as I expected to pay the Citroen garage for checking the car out I am a few quid in pocket.

As a rule of thumb, whatever I do will be wrong.
If I buy these items I know they will not be needed but if I do not, they will be.
I keep thinking that it is the wiring or control panel at fault but will it hurt to have some spare parts for when they are needed?
I would like to keep this car for a good few years if possible
I feel as though I should buy the bits and change the panel if that is not the fault take your advice and alter the flaps by hand. Change the fan, only if my one stops working.

Kind regards

Andy

I'm sorely tempted to buy a front wing and exhaust section among other
parts from the same seller. In my personal experience some german sellers
are really great/helpful although the postage is high. I've been stitched up by
a german computer hardware outfit too to the tune of £200+ bought through
ebay which still leaves a bitter taste in my mouth too, but I guess that could
equally have been in South Wales too!!

I'd use Paypal as my preferred method of payment as you you can easily
claim money back if things go pear shaped!

Why not check the flap motor FIRST? You'll have to remove it if you get
another and need to replace it anyway - you may as well find out if it helps
the day to day comfort/use of the car, before parting with the hard earned!
I can probably help with the motor, so long as I can find where I've stored it!!

The digital panel may in fact be a 100% working order, but the electrical
connections from it to the motors may simply be poor. Bear in mind these
cars wrote the definition of dodgy electics in their early hayday!!

I've also got one of those temp sensors handy for sure!!

Hi Andrew
I must say, you are swaying me.
I may even take your advice and have a look at the flap motor to see if I can make a difference. Is it a difficult job to change it if it is the culprit?
Trouble is the dark nights. I could remove the glove box, control panel and panel under the dash to check all of the connections. Could even be something obvious.
Doubt if I will be able to do it before the weekend.
I am interested in any parts that you may have for sale, if they will fit my car.

Off to bed now to have a think about it again, not that thinking about it helps! Need a 12 volt hair dryer for the frosty mornings.

Kind regards

Andy

I'll have a delve around my Xm's and remind myself what's where and why! :D
I know there's nothing in the drivers side central console as that's where the
heater matrix lives with it's attendant feed piping. I'm sure I'll find something
to illustrate things better in some oof the manuals/brochures etc. In fact the
original launch brochure I had requested at the motorshow has a technical
illustration of the dash/heater system no doubt used to impress prospective
buyers about how big and complicated the dash is!!
