XM 3.0 V6 SEi 92. Heater problem.

Post by Andy B »

I have a 1992 (K reg) XM 3.0 V6 SEi with air con and climate control and have heater problems.
Fan only works on full speed but all green lights work.
Whatever setting I select it still blows cold.
Seems like the flaps (or whatever they are) to divert airflow are not working.
Car has no water leaks so I would think it is a fault with the control panel.
All help welcome.

You seem to have two seperate problems here. The blower running at full speed is probably due to short circuit transitors in the regulator which is on the blower itself. The simplest solution would be to get another from the breakers, they are quite easy to fit. Remove the cover under the glove box and you will see the blower. Remove the plugs and three screws and it will drop out. If you are profficient at DIY you can replace the transistors, the type No is on my signature. They are good for the XM as well.

The lack of heat regulation is likely to be caused by a faulty flap motor, you will find this under the glove box. Remove all of the fixing screws including the one under the escutcheon around the opening button and lift the glove box out. The motor is on the right front. You can remove the motor and wind the gear round to give you heat as a temporary measure.

Hi Peter. Thank you for the reply.
This morning after starting the car and scraping the ice from my screen, I put the fan on (not that it helps!). I could hear quite a loud noise (like a fan) but it was not the fan. I turned the fan off and could still hear the noise.
I found the noise was above my head. I switched the ignition off and started the car again. The noise was not so loud but I could still hear it.
After work today I could not hear it at all.
I know that a thermostat is fitted in this location but have no idea if this is yet another problem or if this due to other problems.
I will have to search the scrapyards this weekend.

Kind regards

Andy

Hi Andy, I'd concur with Peter on the blower speed and the lack of heating.
The central electric console can be quite a sought after SH part as they do
seem to give troubles. One thing to watch when taking the glovebox out to
get at the flap motor are the plastic lugs on the rather flimsy glovebox catch!

The noise in the head lining is the cabin temperature sensor - this is mounted
in the roof console with the central locking receiver behind the electric
window switch. The buzz on some cars I've driven can be very intrusive and
can actually be altered by a squirt of WD40 - you may be fortunate to simply
undo/redo the multplug connection and see it run better! You could of course
simply leave the mini motor disconnected or sever the wires to it like a rather
impulsive pal of mine did to his as it was bugging him - he said it sounded
like a trapped wasp...

Out of curiosity is your Xm a manual or an auto btw...

Hi Andrew.
Thank you for that information.
My car is auto.
No doubt this will take some time to cure as spare parts are quite hard to get hold of, as you well know.
When I first bought the car I could go into any scrapyard and pick parts off 2 or 3 XMs. Very few yards have seen an XM in the last couple of years.
The only yards that do have them charge 200% more than they should!
It can be cheaper to buy a seconhand XM in running order than to buy the part you need.
Such is life.

Kind regards

Andy

Have a look on ebay Andy, there are usually several XMs being broken and the prices are generally reasonable because there are not many XMs about!

Can anyone tell me what other cars (Makes / Models) have the same Heater Blower Fan motor and Flap motor as my car. I think any other car that has the same parts would be easy to find in most scrapyards.

Thank you

Xantia's have the same blower motor but don't know about the flap motor.

I'd second that (again!!), they're being broken regularly on ebay by the
Pug conversion boys for their 2.0i turbo engines...

I missed your car's description in the sign off Andy, doh! #-o
Look after the autobox, they're fragile and have a nasty tendency to
go pop at more than 120k miles...

Just another thought. There is a web sit just for XMs and several members have a stock of parts. Its free to join and very usefull.

Thank you very much for your help.
I will search scrapyards and eBay over the weekend.
I hate the cold mornings even with a working heater.
May have to light a small fire inside the car each night till I get it fixed.
Or a large one!

Kind regards

Andy

Thank you Andrew
Sorry to say, I understand German even less than I understand XMs!
I have saved the item on my watchers list as a last resort but would obviously like to get it sorted or part sorted this weekend if I can.
I have managed to locate a couple of parts but so far no replies.
Off to bed now for an early start but must go out first to light the fire in my car!

Kind regards

Hi all.
My car went into a Citroen garage today. They told me they would be able to pinpoint the fault.
Good news was, they did not charge me.
Bad news is, they have no idea what the fault is.
They said the system has ECU's that should talk to each other but they must have had a row and are no longer talking.
Could not even get any fault codes.
The wiring harness is breaking up?
A new control panel may cure the problem but may not.
My only option is to change all the bits or dump the car.
I think I have located a fan unit, control panel and the roof thermostat (Interior temperature sensor) but will also be looking for any other bits that may help me. Still thinking about lighting a fire inside it.

Not an easy car to find bits for.

Any thoughts or ideas from you are most welcome.

Kind regards

Andy

I don't think there'll be an ECU for the fan blower!!

What other parts do you need? Seems desperate scrapping the car mind!
At LEAST yours works; I've got a 'playing-hard-to-get' totally dead
top-of-the-range Xantia here that's really starting to p!ss me off!
