Be very careful removing the centre sphere because if you should be able to wind it off then you'll destroy the pipe connecting into the back of it. This has to be loose/undone before unscrewing the sphere. Mine was very tight and had to be chiseled off with a masons chisel and lump hammer.
Also once you have got movement on the spheres, you should only unscrew them half a turn before depressurising the hydraulics. The remove the spheres.
Steve.

Hi,
A quick check to see if car is Hydractive is to open bonnet and look at the pipes going to the green spheres. If the pipes are aound 30 mm, car is non -hydractive---if around 70-80 mm, car is hydractive.
Hope this helps,
Greg

Non-Hydractive models use 2.6mm hydraulic pipe to the strut tops, Hydractive models use 10mm....
If you can name one place in any Citroen that uses a 70-80mm hydraulic pipe I'll eat my hat

hi sam
i recently changed my rear sphere,s on my 95 m reg lx 1.9 td xantia and i used a good quality oil filter removal tool which i borrowed it looked like a pair of mole grips with a chain attached which held the sphere solid i had the car on its high setting with the back jacked up supported by axle stands mine were very tight the o/s lose,nd with a bit of force but the n/s one i couldent budge so i removed the rear wheel and you can see the sphere i put the tool on the sphere then used my foot to undo it, it took me ages but i got there in the end when i loosend them i first let the car down to its lowest setting then depresserised the system with the valve on the front of the accumilator sphere housing then removed the sphere,s by hand i tried the hammer and chisel approach first but its a waste of time mine were extremly tight you have to get the proper tool you,ll never do it without it

i have just the same tool but i wouldnt like to put much force on it,i have also got a 30cm stanley tools pipe chain wrench which i have had for many years,i normaly use with a 2' tube slid over the end, works every time, and i have got the tool which is a length of 3/4 steel bar with a circle of spring steel and a pinch bolt to clamp it onto the sphere this works just as well as the pipe chain wrench
regards malcolm

Hi malcolm and Sam
ive been trying to get hold of one of these tools myself but i cant seem to get hold of one ive tried chain oil filter wrenches what you can get in a normal car shop but theyre no good this tool looked like the self locking pliers or mole grips type thing but with a chain which locked solid on to the sphere i had to use my foot on the n/s sphere as laying on my back i could,nt get the leverage i needed even with a pipe on the end but i did it gently and eventualy it moved even the guy i borrowed it from cant remember were he had it from he said "ive had the tool years! he uses it also for removing sphere,s but the tool looks something like this oil filter draper tool here. but the one i used is was with a chain. Sam if you live in the west midlands area try midland citroen in wednesbury off junction 9 m6 there,s a citroen breaker and they also supply and fit new sphere,s for £70 if you go there and he,ll do it while you wait but phone first on 0121 502 3311 if you go there take a look at the tool he uses its the same one as i used

Steve.
Correct. As its an LX it will of course have the basic number of spheres.
When we did the rear spheres we put the car on high, supported the car and used a pair of huge mole grip clamps (thingy!) to get them free and then lowered the car on some ramps and depressurised etc etc, a lot of work to get them budged but a lot of money saved.
Once they were off it was easy peasy!
