1.9 TD MPG OR RANGE FROM ONE TANK?
Moderator: RichardW
At the moment I usually mange in my current 1.9TD sensation about 10 miles for every £1 of diesel I put in the car and at it's about 97p a litre, thats a 42mile return journey to work on the M8 but avoiding the worst of the rush hour and at about a steady(ish) 65mph.

i get about 35-40 mpg out of my estate (depending on how much tat i load in the back and er how quickly i want to get home)
so these new 14hdi engines.....do they really return 70mpg plus (or is that all advertisers lies )

The figures for the new engine may well be really impressive.
For example:
C4 HDi 110 - 47.1, 70.6, 60.1 (urban, extra Urban - combined.)
ZX 1.9D - 33.2, 51.4, 42.2 - same basis
BX 1.9D ( 1990) Urban - 43.5, 55 MPH 61.4, 75 MPH 46.3
BX for comparison only and is included as it has the same engine as the ZX 1.9D, is older and I have the old system of measurement figures, and actually weighs less. We have a ZX 1.9D - and I'd recon on it generally doing between 40 and 50 MPG. I have seen 55 - but that is unusual. Mid to high 40's is common.

The surprising thing about the figures I've quoted above is how poor the ZX is compared to the BX on the new urban cycle. 33 odd must be about the worst that you can get out of it - and ours which does loads of town driving probably never drops below 38 - 40 - which means that the figures for new cars may be beatable!
So yes - economy has improved significantly - due to direct injection, higher fuel pressure (gives better atomisation), multi-stage injection (reduces knock - and seems to be more efficient) and turbochargers which increase combustion chamber pressures which gives a better explosion.

its a big difference...can it all be down to the lower weight of the BX?.....i suppose on stop start driving vehicle weight must be a large factor but that large?jeremy wrote:The surprising thing about the figures I've quoted above is how poor the ZX is compared to the BX on the new urban cycle. 33 odd must be about the worst that you can get out of it - and ours which does loads of town driving probably never drops below 38 - 40 - which means that the figures for new cars may be beatable!

No its nothing to do with the cars at all. Its the method of calculation - in the mid 90's they revised the testing procedure, intending the new one to be more realistic.
The point I'm making is that I'd expect the BX and ZX to be very similar if measured in the same way - and so you can see what difference the new system makes, producing figures which I would suggest can be beaten in normal driving.

oh right see what you mean.....yeah i have to say in the old days i never ever got close (no matter how i drove) to the mpg you were meant to get (and after a few years i stopped even bothering to look)jeremy wrote:No its nothing to do with the cars at all. My last Xantia TD made a pretty constant 47mpg; half motorway, 25% A-roads and 25% town driving. Suffering a speedo drive failure, I haven't even got through a tank of diesel yet to work out the new one!
I think half the trick is to drive it like a Diesel - if the revs are above 2400rpm, then change up a gear! Thrashing a TD doesn't accomplish that much apart from using too much Diesel. Changing up at between 2000-2300rpm seems to drop you around the peak torque in the next gear. This is where the most pulling power is on a TD - use it.

Do the usual checks..air filter should be clean, fuel filter, binding brakes, 2lb of lead attached to your right foot....thats after trying to see how many miles i could get out of a full tank

My 405 1.9td can get anything between 35 mpg and 50mpg. 35 was with binding rear brakes and dirty filters
Otherwise it averages around 40-45 mark though. Thats with 40ish miles of motorway and about 10 miles of city driving every day. On longer trips as long as i keep the speed legal ish it stay at the higher end 45+ sub legal it goes higher.
Again it does depend on my filters/oil/tyres etc as i can usually tell if have left it too long for change as the mpg really drops off.
For me as well it is very load dependant as i often have things on the roof and full car of people and that is never good for mpg. A full car and roof of kayaks and a heavy right foot gives me 40-42 usually.
