Hi guys

Well today ive just got the rev counter going agian :D the job of removing the sensor was easy peasy its right were jeremy said it was i just put my car up on ramps set it to the high setting got underneath and saw the thing right away and the job was easier than i first thought thanks to your pic Dave and the help of Citroen spares Birmingham. but now i notest maybe the engine is idling to high its ticking over at 1000 revs :?

If it's idling at 1000 rpm and the engine is up to temp (80°C) then the cold start cable is knackered. They're cheap to buy, but a bit awkward to replace - you probably need to remove the thermostat housing to change the cable over.

i dont think you can just replace the cable,as i belive its all part of therthermostatic device,i may be wrong!!!!,first thing i would check is how tight is the throtle cable,if its tight just let the adjustment of a couple of grooves

You're right Malcolm - the cable and temp sensor unit come as one, and it 'just' unscrews from the thermostat housing. Not overly expensive from GSF.

You can adjust the idle speed but I wouldn't until you are sure the cold start cable is working properly. It runs from the thermostat housing to the back of the pump (Bosch - front if Lucas). It should be taut when the engine is cold, then slack when the engine is hot. If it's taut all the time then it's goosed. If it's slack all the time it might just have let go (unlikely) and someone had fiddled the idle speed up to help starting. Most likely it has stopped working and is stuck in the fast idle position.

i cant remember the mesurments to check to set up the cold start fast idle devise, but if you have the BOL it will give them in there, someone might have adjusted it up tight with engine hot,so if the cable is tight in the hot state slacken of the clamp at the pump end of the cable and see if the lever moves and the revs drop,if they do i would do the clamp back up at this point and see what happens when the engine is stone cold

Hi Malcolm and Richard

Well i had a look at that and sure enough the cable was tight when the engine was hot so i slackened it off and sure enough the revs came down but still a tad high 800, but from cold although i hav,nt checked the cable since i adjusted it but was back up to 1000 when cold so its a safe bet eveything is working ok so i just think the idle speed needs adjusting
