Xantia TD Ribbed Belt Tensioner Bolt Help!

Post by PicassoPigeon »

Its 19mm that holds on this auto tensioner thing but i cant get it off with my spanner so i thought i would try a socket and breaker bar but the normal 19mm socket on the breaker bar will not fit between the the side of the car. Is there a short socket that i can buy or a socket that you can put in place of the knuckle on the breaker bar?

How can i get this thing off?

Going nuts here!!

Any chance you can hit the spanner with a hammer? Can you get a pipe on the spanner? Might you be able to remove the engine mount and jack the engine up and get the socket on? Would you get it on with a wobble extension or universal? Can you get some heat on the bolt with a blowlamp or similar to help free it?

It's not LH thread by any chance

Have now undone the bolt but it hits the chassis so i cant remove it.

Is it possible to remove the alternator mounting, is that what this tensioner is fixed too. i could then remove it off the car.

Hi Gav425,

Can I ask why you are taking bolt off :?:

As I only did it when replacing tensioner as the bearing had shot the bolt causing the ribbed belt to shred.

Cheers

Replacing the tensioner as it is the cause of my belt shredding, it has kicked out of line and so pulling the belt away so that it jumps off the HP pump.
By leaving it like this for sometime i have then seized my alternator.

I think the bracket will have to come off, what a ball ache.
If you have got a belt from GSF then it might not fit, the length for my 1.9TD aircon model is 1725, GSF only list them to 1690 and they wont go on anyhow.

Hi Gav,

I found when changing my tensioner i had to move the power steering pump ,out of the way .
Once I did that and a fiddly bolt holding the tension spring the bracket and bolt were fairly easy to remove.

Bit of a B****r to put the tensioner spring bolt back.

Good Luck

Just to say thanks to everyone, I have now completed my task. I removed the whole alternator bracket and this made it very easy to replace the tensioner and spring out of the engine bay. Its a bummer of a job but its done now. Thanks once again.
