off subject.. amplifier

Post by jgra1 »

Hi all, a friend has sold me a two channel BOSS powered amp. Is it ok for me to cut into wires for front speakers and run them through this unit and out of the back, and then onward to the speakers?

Car is a Xantia with standerd stereo.

I guess one side effect is that I will be amplifying the dash tweeters too? aren't they wired in with the front door speakers?

I realise the standard speaker wires are fairly light duty.. I dont know if this will matter, but I reallly dont want to rewire the fronts completely with new cables..

hmmmm.... any thoughts?

I think this will depend on whether the amp can accept high level input signal which is what it would get if you fed the speaker cables through it. Amplifiers with RCA sockets are for low level input only, some amps will have sockets to take both.

becareful if your amp is expecting "line level" from the input,

if you are going to use your car stereo's speaker outs as the input for the amp then you will more than likely damage the amps. you need to see if your new amps accept the high-level input.

line-level(is the term i prefer to use) or low-level(some like to call it) uses a range of 240mV to 6.6 V where as high-level uses some 2 volts to 50 volts! so you may have to get on the look out for something to drop the voltage level.

If your still running original equipment speakers then it will be easy to fry them with an aftermarket amp if you get carried away!! What is the power output (RMS/channel is much more important than PMPO) of the amp?

guys i will come back to you on this..

I have some beefy 160w pioneers to go in front doors, and i will examine the amp and get back to all on its specs..

the variable input level dial sounds like it may be useful..

The variable input potentiometer is used to change the sensitivity of the amplifier, usually between 0,7V and 8V (line leve inputs).
To use the amplifier from the speaker connections you need a level converter, that converts High level signals from the radio to low level (or line level) signals to drive the amplifier.
Any car audio shop should get you those units.

thanks V6..

so , normally with one of these units, you would run it from dedicated RCA leads from the back of an aftermarket stereo? rather than my method.... ?
