Xantia suspension noise

1997 TD Xantia. I have had this car for 6 years with few problems until now.
When I turn the engine off I sometimes hear a loud groaning noise coming from the front as though a moving part was dry or binding. It's driving me mad......give us a clue guys please. Matt N E Derbys.
