Oil from back of ZX_XUD

Post by citroenbx »

My 1994 1.9 TD has developed a small oil leak running down the back of the engine.

I cannot see anything from the top looking down and its very difficult laid on your back looking up.

What oil pipes are traving round the back of the engine bay and are there any know problems with leaks here ?

I have just changed the rocker cover gaskit for a new one thinking this could be the problem...it was weeping a bit but now its dry.

Thanks

Best thing to do is to use an engine cleaner such as Gunk. Hose it off, then run the engine and see where the fresh oil is coming from.

The camshaft oil seal behind the timing belt pulley can leak very badly, the oil goes all over the rear of the engine making the actual leak difficult to pinpoint, have a look under the belt cover.

Other possibilities are the turbo oil feed pipe and its return pipe or the head gasket.

There are the feed & return oil pipes for the turbo only. No oher pipes carrying engine oil is found here.

The XUD engines are reputed for their oil weeping head gaskets - especially at the rear left (car's) corner of engine. But it comes gradually and is slowly getting worse - never sudden like a burst seal or pipe.

As the engine is transversely mounted the tendancy is for any oil on the front of the engine to get blown to the back - so even leakoff pipe leaks can produce oil at the back on the engine.

I've had the vent pipes on both our cars leak and found that putting jubilee clips cured the problem. The ones I'm talking about are those from the rocker cover to the filler and so on.

Other causes can be camshaft oil seals.

Rocker cover leaks run back there as well as the left hand side oilway (head gasket) I have a slight leak there too, it can wait until the engine comes out really.
