Considering the mess that EGR valves make of intake systems anyway, I would have thought that you could buy a 1.9td laguna II very cheaply, and then just remove the EGR, blanking the ports on the intake and exhaust manifold.
Cheap car, cheap fix, no further problems....

I doubt that the 1.9 DCi lump would be in a Volvo

I know Ford & PSA got together to do the TDCi lumps & V6 2.7 HDI lump that appears in the Jag & other Ford & PSA cars.
You might find a Nissan with a DCi lump in, Not that anybody in the know would have a new Nissan with its lovely Renault electrics
Renault electrics make Fiats look good

The 1.9Dci was in the old S40 and V40, also in the Mitsubishi Carisma. The Carisma and S40 were a joint venture between Volvo and Mitsubishi, made in Holland in what was the old Daf plant, that plant made the 340 with Renault petrol engines, so their was history between Renault and Volvo.p20 wrote:Where else did the 1.9dci engine go? Depending on what year S40 and V40 you're referring to, I'm not sure this is completely true, as the 1.9DCi engine is electronic control (high pressure and electronic injectors, HDi style-e) is it not? Certainly the 1997 V40 I've just done a load of work on does not have an EGR valve.
But, I've no doubt later V40 and S40 models got the electronic control engine.

You're right that the earlier cars didn't get common rail, the common rail engine, but after one of the facelifts they started to get it, the same was true of the Mitsubishi. I don't think they got the same power output that the Laguna got even when they got the common rail engine in any case. A work colleague had this happen a fairly new Discovery TD after he overfilled the engine with oil.... he got his missus and kids out and retreated to a safe distance whilst the engine slowly disintegrated.... Don't blame him either (company vehicle)

my cousin bought a brand new Clio 182 last year off the internet, he didn't like it and it had electrical problems, so he sold it for more than he bought it!
anyway, has this engine running on ever happened to a xantia, they have front handbrakes, would that help at all.
so LHM doesn't boil, thats so cool.
can't you shove an automatic into Park and hope it stops?

Nearly got choked at an auction last week when a Focus "Ran away" half way through the bidding. Couldn't see the auctioneer for nearly 10 minutes until the smoke cleared!!

I doubt you could get the locking pin to engage if the car was moving at any sort of speed, and if you did, it would snap off rather than stop the car or the engine..
Your only sensible option, is to select neutral, brake to a standstill, and exit the car asap!!

Never heard of a Citroen turbo diesel run-away. But it might of course happen as pr statistics some day ...
It has nothing to do with build quality - or engine oil quality. Its just statistics - nothing can be made 100% error free.
BTW : previously it was a wellknown problem here in DK with n/a diesel engines run-away. Because cars are so expensive here that we kept on driving in cars screaming for the scrapyard. And the engines were untouched because of service costs. Had a colleague who had a VW Golf I diesel which just barely could keep itself coasting when near home or work - because then the engine & oil was so warm it could escape the piston rings into the combustion. He had to stop it by braking the car while in gear. The engine oil was never replaced - but rather consumed ...

Rather as Anders says old worn engines can develop lives of their own. Some years ago when Cummins produced a two stroke diesel it was a common problem for the engine to bounce against a compression just enough for it to run up backwards. The wear in the governor was just enough for the fuel rack to leak fuel in and once away it would then overide the stop lever and governor and allow the revs to steadily rise to destruction.
Standing alongside a 2 litre diesel is bad enough but I dare you stand alongside a 6 cylinder 6 litre version once it gets going
