Also suspecting the pollen filter.
That's if the car has air conditioning and pollen filter.
The filter can be washed, dried, and even 'scented' for re-use.
Is it a Xantia we are talking about ?
The wipers don't have to come out.
Better explore for ways to open the air intake through the top.
That's if we still look for dead rats and mice.

Not sure where the filter is on the Xara, but try doing without it for a few hours (won't do any harm as long as you don't drive somewhere with big lumps in the air!).

The filter is in the space above the passenger floor.
Remove the felt cover, and the filter is inside the clear plastic housing, 3 brassy screws, or sliding cover, depending on the vintage.
Brilliant idea on dnsey's part, to try without filter.
Filter costs about £10 at GSF, part Nº: N12301.
I'm too stingy to pay that much for the filter, and wash it instead.

But I could have told you where your Xantia one is, if I hadn't relied on my rapidly failing memory for the model of your car!

No, from the father's side, Flemish, which is Dutch of Belgium.
The Dutch are the Scots of the Continent. Image

From the mother's side, Walloon, which is French of Belgium.
From her side comes the need to stand up against imposts. Image

In the beginning, the pollen filter was costing the equivalent of about £60 here.
Never paid that, would rather go without it.
The price has dropped several times since, and is reasonable now, but too late.
I’ve washed the current filter 5 times this far.
It feels a bit loose, but is still in one piece and lets the air through.
It must also still absorb dirt, because it does blacken in time.

Gabriel,
I've just read your question and I think the burning smell may be coming from the heater resistor thats positioned under the dashboard in the passenger foot well area. it's a round looking disc type plug with wires connecting to it. I has a similar problem myself and found the wires had melted/burned out.
Have a look it may be the cause.

Ok, but if the wires had burned out then did you still have the heat with the smell? what I am saying if you had a burn out with the wires how did the heater still heat up?

the plastic wire insulation had melted but the wires were still intact. I got a replacement from a scrap yard with long wires on it. Cut the ones on my car and reconnected the replacement. Worked ok.

The 'musty carpet' smell.

Sorry for the delay in answering.
Even 'recent' filters cause that, and it can come good.
The filter can also be washed.
