Post by simonelsey »

Sorry for posting this , but a friend of mine had his ford escort 1.6 96 fail the mot . Mot tester said failed fast idle test. Any ideas as to why it wouldnt stay at fast idle .I belive it dropped revs Any ideas would be a great help .

PS Ive told him to buy a citroen .

I think its the other way round - MOT test is conducted on a hot engine so it sounds as though the thing is staying in fast idle mode.

At a guess I'd say look at the engine thermostat (start from cold - hose from stat to rad should stay cold and suddenly warm up as thermostat opens. ) Next would be to test the water temp sensor for the fuel injection.

I'd suggest a trip over to the car mechanics MOT and emissions forum, where they deal with these kind of problems all the time-your more likely to find someone there who knows the ins and outs of Escort emission control!!

Thinking again about this one its unlikely to be the engine thermostat as on the MOT the instructions are to wait till the fans start to cycle on and off before measuring the emmissions. Could still be the fuel injection engine temeprature sensor not informing it that the engine has warmed up properly.

Of course blocked air filters and numerous service items may affect things as well (dud ignition leads, old plugs and so on will produce hydrocarbons and whatever from misfires)
