Xantia - How many Ticks?

Post by walcit »

How many ticks would you expect when you start the car? Does it depend how long its been standing, etc?

Are we talking from the pressure regulator?

Several, but the ones from the regulator are the loudest. If the hydraulic system is in good condition, about one every 30 seconds or longer is OK, much more frequent and you probably need a new accumulator sphere

So, on start up, there should only be 1 tick?

I think we are refering to the ticking of the pump which is situated at the bottom left hand side of the engine. If the ticking is more than every 20 seconds once the engine is running and the suspension is under full pressure you have problem. Look to the search button and put in the word 'tick' that should help.
Cheers!

It might click more rapidly at start up until the pressure comes up, but should settle to about twice a minute by the time the suspension come up

More details on the car please ? Year ? Model ? etc...

An anti-sink model when started from overnight should only click once when it finishes rising, and then will go into a normal cycle of clicking once every X seconds, with X being greater than a minute being good.

An earlier model without anti-sink however can have the regulator click several times during lifting up because the high delivery of the single output pump is greater than the demands of the suspension as it nears normal ride height. Once the car is lifted it shouldn't click any more often than an anti-sink model though.

Regards,
Simon

The Car is a 1994 1.9d lx Xantia. I think there are a few ticks on start up, but then after a little bit it stops (when suspension has leveled out), then you hear a tick now and again (not close ticks). Thanks :)

That sounds about right. If it seems to be functioning OK then if the thicks are about every 30 seconds or more than its correct. If they get more rapid its probably a flat accumulator or the non-return valve in the regulator needs re-seating.

Is it a good indication if the brakes are exceptionally good? They are the best brakes ive ever used! They are so instant!

It would be worrying if they weren't!
HP Citroen brakes are exceptionally powerful, even when not at their best - not everyone likes them, but they can certainly lock the wheels effectively :D
