xantia gearbox question

Post by jgra1 »

hi all I have just replaced the gearbox on my TD Xantia.
The engine turns over very slowly and will not start. Its sticking somewhere.
Clutch feels fine and works, wheels turn when in gear (off the ground).

what have i done wrong?

thanks

If the clutch is working properly, then the problem isn't with your replacement box.
Is the battery fully charged?

Be very careful aboutearth wires on modern cars. The problem is that without an earth the electrical system will try and find a route and I'm sure you can imagine that starter current earthing through an ecu isn't likely to improve its performance.

John -

On the gearbox end - between cable eye and gearbox casing - must be a toothed washer which will groove into both and ensure a good connection.
Dont ignore it.

thanks all

no ECU on this car.

Anders, the threaded hole for the Earth bolt has no threads.. full of dirt as it wasnt used for this gearbox's previous life.

will find a reaplcement earthing area in morning

Slow turning over has got to be the best clue!! Likelihood it's the power [or lack of it] getting into the starter after you've disturbed/removed it doing your engine out job. Diesels are a hard engine to start at the best of times. Are you 100% sure the loom connections onto the starter are as they should be as well as the earth previously mentioned?

I'm guessing you've removed the whole engine and gearbox to change the box, or have you worked through the wheelarch and only worked on the gearbox?

Incidentally, if you HAVE removed the whole lot have you primed the fuel feed and bled and pipes that were disturbed...

hi And, its ok I am 99% positive (bad joke) its the negative threaded bolt.
This is my second Xantia gearbox removal in 2 months. Both times I have done them in about 8 hours, mainly working from the top, leaving engine in place.

Yeah engine was all primed etc. it just was turning over about twice in 20 presses of key!! and a load of ominous (bad earth) clicking from gearbox area..

what i am curious about is what really happened to the syncro pinion in the first place... to snap [possibly a third gear cog] in two and then it shoot out of gearbox and tear a huge hole in casing and go on and break the clutch is quite impressive!
I could say I dont dertoy things 'by halves' but that is now a lie ;)
