Hi. The manual tranny in my Xantia is giving a very light hum on the 2nd and 4th gear....
would it be advisable for me to rebuild it? if yes, what needs to be changed?
is the gears worn that gives the noise? it is not really that bad now, it shifts perfectly and smoothly. i can only hear it when i switched off the blower and radio and it only comes as i release the clutch into both these gears.... then again, i am fussy.

Firstly, are you sure that its coming from the gearbox, only front wheel bearings are notorious for making whining noises which vary under load, try cornering when the noise is there and see if its louder in one direction, if it is, it will be the side with the load on it thats the problem. If it is the gearbox, first check the oil level, if thats OK and the noise is the only problem, I would leave it alone unless you particularly enjoy rebuilding gearboxes!
