In the Haynes Manual it says the earlier 1.9TD cooled the compressed air from the turbo by air coming in under the bonnet soundproofing, and the later ones ducted the air to the front to the fans. I've got a 93 model (my first one) and wondered why I have the turbo pipes running to and from the radiator. Have Haynes just got it wrong again like where they say you can change the gearbox mount by removing the battery tray??????????
cheers
Dave

I know that alot of PSA cars had the top mounted I/C(405 ETC)& as far as i`m aware the earlier Xantia`s had the I/C mounted on top of the engine. It may be that yours is just different,or a previous owner moved it for better cooling,or you have a later/newer engine fitted to replace the old one.Although there are a few descepancys(??)in all the manuals i`ve owned over the years.

Interesting.AndersDK wrote:The very early Xantia TD I/C looks like a radiator lying flat on top of the cylinder head - with a huge rubber lip round the edge to aid catching the under-bonnet ducted air from top down thru the cooler.
Its the BX TD I/C setup directly adopted.
My mums 1993 1.9TD (without anti-sink) has the intercooler in front of the radiator. It also has no ECU. (ECU box completely missing)

Simon I would have expected a Xantia of that age to have a purely mechanical injection pump and the only ECU would be for the ABS - and a few minor ones for door light delays and the like.
Our late 94 ZX 1.9D has a pump which is identical to my 89 BX (Roto-Diesel) less the extra fuel device for the turbo. Neither have shielded stop solenoids.

Yes, it has the mechanical injection pump. As I say, the ECU box is missing completely, it isn't just empty. If it had hydractive 2 suspension I guess there would be an ECU box there for that, but it doesn't have that either, so no box. Yes it does have ABS.jeremy wrote:Simon I would have expected a Xantia of that age to have a purely mechanical injection pump and the only ECU would be for the ABS - and a few minor ones for door light delays and the like.
Door light timers don't require a computer, a simple electronic timer will do

I seem to remember some time back that some guy was selling a xantia on ebay with a top mounted IC.... didn't he get a lot of stick from some guys on here saying 'it wasnt original' and 'it must be out of a pug' ???

As far as I'm aware the Xantia NEVER had a top mounted intercooler, its always been front mounted. Some earlier models had it top mounted (such as the ZX and BX) but to my knowledge the Xantia never did, my '94 certainly doesn't and none of the many Xantiae I've been under the bonnet of have either. I don't think there is enough clearance under the bonnet to fit one, the top of the engine is fairly close to the insulation.
The '94 Xantia of mine has NO bitrons or ECU either, just a simple switch fitted into the radiator to control the fans and a pure mechanical injector pump.
There was that single Xantia on ebay with a top mounted intercooler, it was a phase 2 that looked suspicously like it was accident repaired. It didn't have any ducting in the bonnet lining either so I suspect that the intercooler would have no effect whatsoever.
