I still haven't got around to testing the feed at the plug/socket that has been mentioned, but I may have a solution anyway...

The batteries in the plip are flat after only a fortnight (and not being used). So I think I might be right in assuming that it's the plip that's at fault.

It's payday on Wednesday, so I might head off to a main dealer and see if I can order a new one.
