306 Hdi 90 Ticking/Flapping Sound/Noise
Moderator: RichardW
Hi fastandfurryous. Suppose is good to see we are not alone with this problem but yeah the noise although not a great deal loud is annoying esp when considering that when I had my old XUD9TE DTurbo 306 that was smooth once warmed up and on the move. Maybe the injectors on these earlier Hdi engines could not handle the high pressure load behind them and after a few years started weeping. They tell me at the garage that I am taking it in to (citroen specialist) that they can pull the injectors off and test them for leaks, I am not sure I believe that just by testing the fuel that goes back down to the fuel return line is proof of a leak. They can get recondtioned injectors straight from Bosch at around £130 a piece. What I would really like to do is "borrow" some injectors just to see if that is the cause or share the cost somehow with someone else to perform a trial of the leaky injector theory. Also need to get the software checked for any updates to the ECU etc. Keep in touch
Is it a simple process to have the ECU altered to reduce or switch off pre-injection, is it possible? anyone know. Do later Hdi's suffer the same problem. Has peugeot stealthy made a mod on later cars>
Powerlee, would the injector bench test be foolproof for detecting leaks as far as this Hdi problem is concered?

Ive never seen injector testing done myself, Just read about it in a trade magazine, Something to do with testing spray patens & flow testing to see how much fuel is supplied in a set time.
On the ECU front anybody with the correct kit can re map one of these, A few of the HDI owners on here have had there ECU's chipped / re mapped
The amount of software updates Peugeot release each year is staggering, Theres no telling what modifications they have done to the HDI ECU software down the years.
My petrol 206 got another ECU software upgrade saturday, The last ECU upgrade was only done about 5 weeks ago.

Pass, No idea im afraid.gwailo wrote:Are the pre-injection setting in the fuel map itself so can also be adjusted or deleted?
Thats a question that Bosch automotive or PSA Peugeot / Citroen will be able to answer.
Email Peugeot customer services & ask them, They will know the answer but it will take a couple of days for them to find out
Im not joking either, Peugeot customer services will get onto Peugeot technical France & they will provide the answer.
Provide Peugeot with the VIN & reg number of the car in question as well as your details.
peugeot software will not remove pre injection, pre injection will reduce noise so taking it away main injection would go with one big bang instead of a nice soft pre injection before the main!! as for checking hdi injectors you can do a leak test by just cranking or in ecu parameters you can look at injection correction which will show a duff injector or have a scope and amp clamp and that definetly shows a knackered injector i have done it!!
Just got the car back from the Citroen specialist. He has changed the crank pulley are requested. The old one was a kind of greenish colour but was still in one piece. The idle seems a bit smoother now - well possibly. The injectors were tested for backflow - there wasn't any although I know this is not a proper test for injectors. They need to be put under very high pressure first. The mechanics reckoned that is not worth having them tested, getting an exchange set for around £380+Vat would be make more sense and defininelty rule out any misbehaviour. The only thing sensible left to do is ensure all the software is updated by the pug dealer. If Hdi owners have complained about smooth running in the past, pug may have altered the fuel maps, timing etc in the ECU.
I contacted peugeot UK and so far all they have said by e-mail is go to local dealer even tho I asked them call me. All in all the mechanic reckoned that these ticking sounds are somewhat characteristic of the engine, whether they can be smoothed out can only be sorted out by software mods.

Today I went to the pug dealer and spoke to one of the mechanics and took him out round the block. He recognised the ticking sound as previously described and discussed in this post and said that he had experienced owners complaints in the past and have never been able to sort it out with peugeots own software updates or replacement injectors. It seems that according to him only some of the older Hdi cars do it with bosch injections systems rather than the siemens ones. He suggested going to "collins performance" (http://www.mongooseexhausts.com/) and getting an expert opinion of someone who is good with eeprom reprogramming and the like. What u reckon folks?
