If strugling to bleed the brakes, get a bike pump on the bleed nipple and pump away, will empty the line into the reservoir and remove any air locks. If the system is the same as a 205 then you have 1 comp. valve for both rear brakes whilst it is still 1 line. So if it was this then both would be pap! Might be a stupid question..... but the brake shoe auto adjust thingy isn't nackered is it? Or is it just badly adjusted?

Hi Chris,
I've fitted new shoes which has slightly improved things but the pedal could be a lot better. I've bled the brakes and got a little air out but not much. The thing is, it still feels like there's air in the system because if you pump the brake the pedal does get harder. It's like there's air getting into the system but there doesn't seem to be any leaks. I'm going to look under the dash, by the pedals tomorrow to see if there's a leak from the master cylinder.

Could you elaborate on the bike pump method? How do you fit the end on the bleed nipple and keep it in place and where do you let the fluid/air out once you have pressurised the system?

I think what Eskimoigloo is saying is that you open the bleed nipple and simply pump air back down the pipe towards the master cylinder. The theory is that you remove all fluid and air and with luck only fluid comes back down the pipe - and so when it comes out the nippleyou can be confident that all air has been removed.

Never heard of it before but it seems interesting and I might well try it sometime when I can't get the air out.

Its not a good idea to pump much air back through the master cylinder as air could become dissolved in the fluid and then come out in the pipes - so you get i all working beautifully and then a couple of days later its back to square 1.

PASSED :) :) :)

I've found out what the problem was....the shoes. Even though they looked good on the outside face, it was only when I turned them over I could see they tapered down to nothing. So I put some new shoes on and the car passed :) The pedal is still a bit spongy but hey! I can live with that.

Thanks for all your help and suggestions it was really appreciated.

All the best

Hello, I know this thread is old, my zx estate passed its mot today with an advisory for stiff Brake Compensator Valve I asked the tester how to free it up and he said leave it as it could cause more problems with the brakes and its not to much of an issue as it is , he said the braking system was perfect as I rebuilt it 2 Years ago, and it was well over the pass numbers , any ideas as to why or should I wd40 it ? How and where on the valve.

Hi Husky,
Have you got a part number for that (complete) item?
What I've looked at in Parts (4861 89 for saloon, 4861 90 for estate, both NFP) doesn't look like that.
Pop up your VIN, too.

Too many zeros in the the VIN, I've updated it.

Yours is 486190 which is NFP unsurprisingly... Not enough detail in the picture to see what the nylon bit is about - I rather suspect it might be an installation clamp to hold it closed till you get it on the car.
