Xantia Front Down Pipe & Cat

Post by docbrown »

Hello All
The weld where my downpipe meets the 'cat' has started leaking and as a result the turbo is very loud almost a whistling noise, I think a long trip on the motorway at high speed may have caused this.
First what do you recommend.
1. replace the part with an original at £136.50+vat from GSF
2. I've heard that you can fit a non cat pipe wich would only cost £36.50+vat
In regards to option 2 will it pose a problem when MOT'ing the car. Will the non cat pipe fit my car.
My car is a 1998 1.9TD

Forgot about this
3. Have the section welded if possible however unsure if this can be done.

This has been discussed very recently;

The easiest way is just to replace the front pipe with one from a non-cat pre '97 Xantia. I did this on my car last year and since then its had slightly improved economy & performance, and no problems passing the MOT at all.

Final question:
Does the Post 97 xantia have any sensor on the exhaust that would be affected by a de-cat pipe?

Welding an exhaust is usually only a temporary repair, once they've rusted to the point that they need welding in one place, there are other places in a similar state.

Finally , managed to get the cat removed and a straight through system put in, in the fist instance the car does feel a lot more powerful, thanks for the advice.

Given that diesel emissions (other than smoke) are not tested at the MOT, I wonder what, if anything, is actually inside these catalytic converters? Are we paying £150 for an empty box?

They are an oxidation catalyst, and are supposed to oxidise smoke partialicals (partially burnt diesel) but in reality they tend to get coated with tar and clog up. You'd probably be better off with an empty box because it would keep the MOT testers happy (the car doesn't need a cat but some testers are fussy about there being one even though it isn't a requirement) and there would be nothing to clog.
