ABS noise from Xantia HDI

Driving a Xantia HDI for the first time this afternoon I noticed that when I hit the brakes I heard a slight "PISSH" sound. Having heard that I braked much sharper and it sounded like the ABS was kicking in "PISHH PISHH PISHH PISHH" is this normal? My old TD used to just given vibration thru the foot when ABS kicked in. Thanks guys.

Be thankful - mine sounds like a machine gun going off. Apparently all is well though in ABS land according to both the main stealer and the independant.
Does it work, do the wheels lock when you brake hard? If not its working.

It works, I braked hard and the ABS kicked in.
