It was using vast amounts of oil and was initially wrongly diagnosed as piston rings which I refused to accept as the smoke was mostly seen when sitting in traffic and after initial start up.

My parents had the exact same problem on a 1988 405 1.9 GRI at only 10K miles, A Peugeot dealer replaced the valve stem oil seals, My parents had to pay for the job but they got a cheque back from Peugeot in under a week for the full amount.
The bill was just under £300 & this is back in 1988, Thank god Peugeot paid up & very quickly too.
Oil guzzling.
