Can anyone tell me if it is possible to replace the auto adjuster cable with a manual adjuster on my car? I have read a few horror stories on here about the autos and my change isn't brilliant.
Thanks.

I think the clutch is ok. No slip or anything like that and the problem I'm describing is only very slight.
How can I tell if the auto cable is working correctly?
The pedal is fairly heavy. Is this normal, a heavy clutch on the TD? I thought maybe the cable might be due for a change because of this and thought I would replace it with the manual.
I've read on here about people who tried to adjust the auto cable and ended up with no clutch at all!

Hi
A heavy clutch is normal for a Peugeot, They do feel more heavy then a Vauxhall, Ford etc.
My 2 litre petrol clutch is heavy also, Its just the way older designed Peugeot clutches are.
I cant really see how you could adjust an auto adjusting cable, The auto adjusting mechanism is inside the rubber bellows on the cable, Theres a spring & other bits inside there, I wouldn't advise trying to adjust it.

Hi,
My clutch pedal is stiff (Pug 405 1.9TD) with an auto adjust cable. I have found 2 cures. One, with limited success, was to disconnect the cable at the clutch end and drip oil down the inner cable. I found it helful to wrap a little piece of duck tape round the end of the outer cable to form a small reservoir for the oil. The second cure was a new cable.
If you find that the clutch bites very close to the maximum depression of the pedal, I found that there is a little rubber pad on the pedal to cushion it when released - you will need to put your head into the footwell to see it. Remove this pad (it simply pulls out) and re-insert it the wrong way round (so you don't lose it) and you will find that the biting point is a bit higher.

I have sucessfully replaced the auto adjust cable on a 106D (1998) with a manual adjust pattern part. Other than extreme awkwardness in fitting the cable at the pedal end (easier to remove pedal, but you have to open a brake bleed nipple to get the brake pedal low enough to get the clutch pedal pivot bolt out) and general difficulty in getting the cable outer to locate in the bulkhead under the steering rack, there are no problems. It will be necessary to check the cable adjustment at each service.
Why do PSA fit a pathetic weak plastic hook-end at the pedal, to an otherwise strong cable?
rotodiesel.

Thanks for all the replies lads, much appreciated.
Now, here's a strange thing. If you read my other post you will know that I had an o/s engine mounting fail recently which has now been replaced. Well, would you believe since it was replaced, the clutch is a whole lot better. The gearchange is a lot sharper and although not 100%, I suppose I have to take into consideration the car has done 107k.
The gearchange felt woolly and not precise before. The only thing I can think of was the engine was floating around and the gears just weren't selecting properly.
I think I'll still change the cable, but I don't feel in such a rush to get it done now. If we get another nice Saturday I might have a look.

If you un hook the cable off the gear box off the clutch lever and yank the cable towards your self this will reset the adjuster on the cable.
My 405 clutch seemed very stiff i tried this but just got a new cable off ebay for a tenner, i recommend it as after that it was VERY light and much improved.
