From memory, you have to lock the pully in something and then use an allen or torqs key to undo the retaining bolt. there are a few jobs that i give to random garages, altenators and this would be 2 of them.

It starts "hammering" quiet and gets louder - and then stops. It all happens in about a 5 second window ( from the time the noise starts). It then goes quiet for about 20 seconds and then starts again!

J Roc (i had a perfect numberplate for you at one point).
How old is the accumulator sphere?
I would chnage your accumulator befor hunting for another pump but at least if you get me that info you will be prepaired if you need to find a pump.
Tanto
I'm going to find you your cars exact pump and from there i can tell you want other models it was fitted to. has your 2.0 sx got aircon? and has it got an autobox.
I garentee the 2.1 TD, CT (2L turbo), V6, 1.6 and 1.8's wont fit but if you can get me the exact speck i can tell you what will.

Andy -
The (only 2 I admit) Xantia I've seen in the engine bay did not have a pulley fitted the way you describe [?]
These were the old fashion crimp on as seen on earlier models - but multi ribbon allright.
As seen on this schematic :

Just as an aside, does this mean that it would be possible to fit a twin-outlet pump from a Xantia to a BX and get rid of the FDV? If so, that would be a rather nice mod.

<hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></blockquote id="quote"></font id="quote">As said above I doubt you could swap the pulleys.
But the BX 16 & 19 engines uses multiribbon drive belt for the alternator - so a little moving around should make it possible to "upgrade" and get rid of the FDV.

yes and vanny has done it.
Andres is right (and must have a much better memory than me considering i have seen loads of these. the pully cant be removed. the only one ware this is not true is the V6 ware the pully is held on with 4 bolts.
I will look up the party number and compatability for you in a few minuts.
