OK chaps, just spent a good hour with my Thread chaser and a tub of grease (no, not that kind of grease!) and the spark plug thread has been restored and a new set of Denso twin electrode plugs fitted.
So, thanks to everyone for their help and advice in saving me a whole lot of trouble.
