Buy another ZX, for that sort of money you can get a really nice one! [^]. Buy a pre facelift one. 1994 or earlier, no cat.. no ECU, no need to have a Turbo, plain ole 1.9D chugger will last a lifetime if looked after and never let you down.
They dont rust, and they don't get moody on cold damp mornings, and refuse to start! .. You may need to oil up things like elec window-elec roof cables n stuff by thats the price you have to pay for having such a luxurious car. [:D] heh heh.. so as long as the interior is nice you wont have a problem..
With the spare cash left over you can take your family to the pub for Sunday lunch. [:o)]

she says it's got to be newer[B)]
Any thoughts on this on ww.honestjohn.co.uk regarding the xasra:
"Spate of conrod failures on 1997 -1998 R and S reg 1.9 XUTD diesels: too many to attribute merely to running with low oil levels. Seems only to affect cars built from April 1997 with DHY (not DHX) serial number engines."
that's the year and engine I'm looking at.

Most failed at around 30k, so long time ago. However, there has been a renewed spate of failures now many are getting to 100k or so. I don't think you can predict it, and the number of failures is very small compared to the number of engines built - but given 2 similar cars, one with DHY engine one not, I'd avoid the DHY. Unless you like changing engines that is!

Playing devils advocate here, what's so special about the ZX that makes you want another one? Surely without the Citroen hydraulic system its no different from say an equivelant Escort or Astra or Golf-I wouldn't have thought that they are all much of a muchness with nothing to choose between them.
I now await the ire of ZX fans[:(]- I'm just curious, thats all!!!

Actually a Zx is a surprisingly good car - with a comfortable smooth ride and extraordinarily good grip thanks in part to the passive rear wheel steer. They also seem well put together - and feels much more solid than my BX (mind you it weighs nearly as much and is noticeably wider.)
They are also virtually immune to speed humps!

bxbodger. It's the same as you fluid suspenssion guys. You have to have a ZX td or simalar to appreciate how they drive. As jeremy says the drive is really quite smooth and the passive rear wheel steer allows you out drive the comprable Escort, Golf or Astra on the fast or slow bends. And as for speed humps, what speed humps. It's the same in the Xsara the ride is very, very good. As a lot of you guys can tell the Xsara Mk 1 is now getting really cheap and the parts aren't that much especially with folk like GSF about. My VTR with oil cost about £25 to do filter change. The fittings are well screwed together aswell. I'm on my second Xsara VTR both have been 98 'S' reg's and both have been great cars. My ZX td again was just good fun, didn't worry about it a bit. All great Citroens and with out the fluid suspenssion

I love driving my BX and love the Hydro setup but think that my ZX's ride runs it very close, so close in fact that there isn't a huge amount in it, in fact the ZX out rides the BX at lower speeds. Downsides are no self leveling or height ajustment.

One thought on the Xsara XUD diesels - the service interval for oil changes went up from 6K to 10K in December 1998.
As most would agree, that's too long, and would mean only one oil change a year on a motor with average miles.
Most TDs should have the 6K service book. The TD was gone by April 1999, replaced with the HDi.

I would agree with all of that. ZX roadholding has the edge on the BX, as well, although the latter is better than average. Fewer squeaks and rattles, as well.

I've got a replacement, It's a X reg HDI Xsara (90 bhp, facelift), found it on ebay:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 02490&rd=1
I had to go £10 over the 2k budget though! Drives well, the 90 engine is faster than I expected, is in good nick all round with just a few cosmetic marks.
Need to get a haynes manual for it today and start taking apart ;)
Thanks for all the comments especially ralph who opened my eyes to the price xsaras are going for.

Seeing how pleased I am with my ZX after 5 years of ownership I decided to post a review on carsurvay, I got a reply: 'The ride comfort of BX, CX, DS and GS/GSA and less the Xantia and Xm are superior to the ZX. The ZX doesn't even come close'.......maybe its just me but I thought that comment was more than a little arrogant!!....also if the idiot in question had read the review properly he/she would have seen that I also drive a 'Hydro Cit' so am in a position to compare them directly. Wouldn't have minded if they'd said 'I think the ZX ride is inferior to etc, etc'. Rant over!!! If you want to read review its:
