Juat made a few phone calls, a replacement clutch for a Xantia hdi £300 from Mr clutch but apparently they use recon clutches and there are some horror stories Citroen near me quoted £900, peugeot xpress fit was £400 this maybe worthwhile. The vehicle quoted was a 99 xantia hdi 110.
If you replaced the vehicle how much life would be left in the clutch in that and what else may need doing? Even though the price of a clutch change maybe half the value of the car at the end of the day they are consumables. We fork out £400 a year on insurance and what do we get for that, a piece of paper.

The host of this forum will do a Xantia TD clutch kit for under £100, this will be oem quality rather than remanufactured (which I have seen fail prematurely) the replacement of the clutch is exactly the same procedure as for example a pug 406 with the exception of unbolting the PR from the gearbox, the point at which non cit mechanics come unstuck sometimes it in dismantling unneccesarily components in this area, axle stands, a trolley jack and reasonable tools should see the job done over a weekend, especially if a friend will help with the heavy bits, go for it. Its only a wear part

OK so we have a range from a little over £200 to near astronomic.
Name the cheaper garages and it would be worthwhile driving to them just to get the job done. The more we can use them the better they should become. Assuming no one has any complaints abut bad workmanship of course.
My Cit approved repairer is in St Ives, Cambs but at £586 he is not low cost in any way.
So come on chaps, name the cheapies and lets use them! Robin

On a hdi they were quoting 8-9 hours. Citroen in the south west london area charge £75 per hour smaller garages charge £50 per hour.

My local Approved Repairer quoted 7.5 hours for a 98 Xantia TD. The clutch kit, driven plate, pressure plate and release bearing would be genuine Cit at £120 plus labour at £50/hour, £375 so £581 including VAT.
I will call Pleiades next and then a local guy I know for comparison. Answers to follow. Robin

i got a clutch put in my TD by a local citroen specialist for £350,
i actualy did one once and never ever again..... i dont know if there is a cunning trick for lining the gearbox up with what would be the thrust bearing on a normal clutch, but two of us spent at least two hours trying to do just that

The engine in you car should be worth £150 upwards if it is good so if you scrap it sell the engine first as its hard to get hold of a good 1.9td...i know took me two weeks to find one ringing around everywhere.
As for the clutch...its a nasty job and if you have not done similar thigs before it is a difficult time consuming job.
the clutch kit for the 1.9 td is also expansive, ive done two on previous occasions the first i paid £100 for a local parts supplier and this was for a VALEO clutch which is the one they come with.
The next i found on ebay for £60 including postage, they are hard to find and are not on oftern but are much cheaper.
If you are off to a garageyou should pay no more than £250 as i got quoted a bit less than this from a cluch specialist.
