Xantia water in oil?

Thanks for your advice. The mayonnaise returned and the oil came out of the dipstick so changed the thermostat.
The water termperature now gradually rises to 90 degrees (the thermostat is labelled 89 degrees) then it opens to the radiator and falls back to just above 80 degrees this means that my engine is now running at between 5 to 10 degress hotter than it did. Took it out for a motorway run and hallelujah therewas no oil all over the engine compartment.
Thanks again for your advice - no less than 3 Citroen dealers and two speacilist garages failed to even suggest this and when I suggested it they rubbished it! -they had never come across a thermostat that failed in the open position. I just hope that the engine is not damaged as it has obviosly been in this failed state for years!
Can anyone tell me if there is a filter on the sump end of the breather pipe? The pipe is secured with a one-use clip and is very difficult to remove so I am loathed to do it if there is no filer / gauze.

I think that one is just an open pipe. glad the thermostat worked for you.
