Is that the fuel tank he's welding?

Possibly; at least he'd go out quicker than the obvious other way, when it dropped on him.
It reminds me of a cartoon; "now watch closely, I'm only going to do this once."[:D][}:)][;)][:o)][:o)]

Yes, this picture does make you wonder, if he finished doing the work, and survived.

This was a common way of working on the underside of a vehicle in Orkney though it would have been completely on its side resting on tattie sacks. Usually it was crowbarred up so far and then a couple of burly farmers would lift it the rest of the way. There is something on the other side of the truck in the picture like it's resting on some metal contraption.
Once I (well a few of us) turned a Fiat 127 on its side in my mates front garden on the grass to change the gearshift rod. With the vehicle on the ground I couldnt get enough swing on the hammer to bang the balljoint into its socket. When we turned the car upright again it started without too much trouble which is amazing really seeing as all sorts of stuff could have dribbled out with it on its side. The things you do when you're a naive 17 year old! Not a care in the world and a 'do it now deal with the consequences later' attitude. God, when I look back now it was bloody stupid and amazing it actually worked!! I had forgotten all about it until I saw this picture!
I once bought some BX parts from a man who was using this technique to get at the underside of the car while he dismantled it. The engine and box had already been removed, but the shell was still pretty heavy even so. He'd decided to drain the fuel tank, so propped the car up on its side, then stabbed a couple of holes in the tank with a screwdriver, and sat smoking a roll-up as he watched the fuel drain into a collection of washing up bowls. I paid him for the parts then left the scene asap !
