79.9p isn't cheap, not when you consider that there is 47p of duty then VAT. The diesel costs 21p per litre then 58p of tax is added. Thats almost 75% tax.
79.9p is 12% cheaper than 90.9. 45p is 44% cheaper than 79.9.

The difference between 79.9p per litre and 90.9p per litre is 50p per gallon. When you look at it that way I would say it is relatively cheap.

Cheap is relative.
When I was in America in 2001, everyone was complaining that 'gas' was reaching the dollar fifty a gallon mark (it has gone way beyond this now). Then, the dollar was worth a bit more but it still worked out around a pound a gallon. So their 'expensive' was cheap to us. Our cheap was unbelievably expensive to them. To an indonesian working in the Nike sweat shop, a dollar fifty was probably way beyond one's means.
So relatively cheap is the only kind of cheap there is.

Never mind the absolute cost of diesel, what about the cost of diesel relative to unleaded? I've seen it as much as 6p/litre more expensive at one station [:(!]
If diesel is cheaper to refine, cheaper to transport and cheaper to store then why-oh-why has it now reached this ludicrous point? Remember the days when diesel was a good 20p cheaper than unleaded (or in those days, four star)?
It's pure profiteering on the part of the government who have spotted the rise in popularity of diesel cars and decided to tax us through the nose for it and punish us for driving more efficient, less polluting cars. Yeah, thanks guys [:(!][:(][:(!][V]

Oh, and I almost forgot: what about tax breaks for more environmentally friendly fuels? Biodiesel? Folks who refine their own fuel from used chip fat and the like? Hello?
