Is biodiesel made from soya the vegetarian alternative to using lard?

There is lots of information in the web about soyabeans based biodiesel. For instance:

In my country diesel cars using this fuel have no modification and some drivers claim better performances.
Concerning V8's, there are too many cars and the agressions to the environment are too high (not to mention the oil crisis that's going on).
A typical V8 does about 15mpg while a second generation 1.6 diesel does about 50mpg... I think this says all.
Take Citroen, for instance - their jewels of the crown never had a V8 (DS, SM, CX, XM). Take the CX GTi for instance - only 4 cilinders (no music) but still enough power for a pleasant drive.
