Creaking as she lowers...

Post by Jshodgson »

My xantia sometimes creaks loudly when it the height is settling after first starting the car. It happens when the car lowers itself. It will do it even if the car has only been standing for a couple of hours. Is it normal? Anything I should check?

is your handbrake on or off when it creaks - my 2000 xant sometimes creaks but only if the handbrake id on as it pushes the back wheels backwards slightly when lowering.

Could be the rear swing arm pivot bearings.
Try jerk down the rear when in normal height. If this produces a creaking sound it would be the rear arm bearings.

No creaking when I push down on the back of the car.
It seems to coinside with releasing the hand brake from a cold start.

I sometimes get a cracking noise from the front discs as they first move - if I've come home with them cold and wet, then left the car a day or two, then I assume that the pads rust to them and you get a great creak/crack as the "joint" is broken. This may not be relevant, it just flashed into my mind when you said "releasing the handbrake...".
