Post by ukmobileman »

MY 93 TD HEADGASKET IS LEAKING COOLANT AT HEAD BLOCK JOINT UNDER DIESEL PUMP (NO PROBLEM DONE MANY HEAD GASKETS BEFORE I AM A MECHANIC!) ARE HEAD BOLTS STRETCH TYPE USE ONCE ONLY OR CAN U USE THEM AGAIN? (LIKE SOME VW'S) ALSO AT 170,OOO MILES I AM WONDERING IF THERE IS AN OVERHAUL KIT AVAILABLE FOR THE TURBO AS I AM GOING TO REBUILD HEAD WITH NEW GUIDES, SEALS AND RECUT SEATS AND FACE VALVES THE TURBO MAY BE DUE AN OVEHAUL
OK THANKS

Hi,
I would suspect that they are streach-bolts but could be wrong.
When I did the head on my ZX Volcane petrol, three of them broke and it was a bugger of a job to get the correct insert and drill out the bolt-ends (ally block corroded to the bolts!).
Anyway I think you wont have the same problem as you'll have a iron block.
As for the turbo overhall kit ask these guys were using for the forum, I'm sure they'll have something to sell you!
Hope it all works out - my head gaskit has started to leak...see my other post..

Yes, the headbolts are definately stretch bolts, and should not be re-used. They are available from Andyspares as a set for £13.75 + VAT.
I'm not aware of a turbo overhaul kit being available anywhere, due to the complex nature of the turbo its best to replace with a reconditioned unit.
Finally, its a good idea to get the head pressure and crack tested when its off the car. I did a head gasket on my ZX TD a couple of years ago, and fitted new Genuine gasket, new head bolts etc etc and it was no better at all! Turns out head had internal crack allowing water into oilways. This is a common problem on this engine.
Good luck

Is it also common for the heads to crack on 1.9 petrol engine?

It's not always bad news; at 148k my TD head gasket went. The only symptom was an over-pressurised cooling system. The head was very flat (a fraction of the limit) and I took the opportunity to reface the valves and replace stem seals as well as the waterpump. This cured the problem. It did another 20k before I sold it.
