ZX Track rod replacement HELP!

Post by Dave1 »

So, I had replaced my brake discs and at the samt time noticed the outer ball joint on the track rod was splitting. Pretty easy to replace I thought! If only. It was siezed in the track rod so badly nothing would move it, penetrating oil and heat both failed. In the end it broke between at the threads. I had to cut some of the track rod away to get it out with mole grips. Obviously I now need a new track rod. Haynes says this is a "3 spanner" job. Nt too hard then! The instuctions are prety vague and I have never replaced one before. I quote,"unscrew the track rod inner ball joint from the steering rack end, whilst preventing the steeing rack form turning by holding the balljoint lock washer with pair of grips." There is no diagram and considering one is under the car it is difficult to ascertain what to grip the washer with and what to unscrew.(I have removed the gaiter) Does the track rod separate from the inner joint in anycase or does one have to get the complete item. I have managed to put an old outer joint in for the time being but want to replace the lot. Is it best left to the garage who would have a ramp etc?
Any help appreciated.

Lots of other goodies on that site if you strip off the last few catalogues from the address.

Hi NiSK,
What can I say, I thought my qestion would be hard to respond to in written terms so the link was excellent. At least I can see exactly what I have to deal with. I ordered the part earlier today in the hope it would become clearer. It will arrive tomorrow but I feel a lot better about how to go about the job now. Looks like it is back under the car for me.
Thanks very much
Dave.
