I have a 93 Xantia 1.8 8 Valve and have noticed a lateral (axial) movement of around 1-3mm in the right hand outer driveshaft section, is this normal? I have driven the car in circles on full-lock to check for CV joint clicking and none is apparent. Any info would be appreciated
Thanks.<img src=icon_smile_question.gif border=0 align=middle>

Hi Christopher, the shaft is a splined fit in to the cv joint and there will be a small amount of end float, when you pull the shaft away from the hub it should come up against a positive stop, this being a circlip on the end of the shaft contacting the outer face of the cv joint, to get the shaft out it should be pulled on while giving a sharp tap to the inner part of the cv joint with a brass drift, this forces the circlip into it's groove and allows the shaft to slide out, sometimes the clip does not retract completely into the groove, when this happens the part of the clip remaning outside the groove gets sheared off, it is important to retrieve the sheared off portion of the clip for obviouse reasons, there should be similar amounts of float in both left and right shafts, if this amount of play was in the joint it's self I would expect it to be accompanied by the tell tale clicking sound that's common with knackered cv joints.
Good Luck
