Undoing a multiplug (Xsara HDi)

Hi - such a stupid question I know, but....
I need to clean a multiplug; the one under the bonnet, passenger side, near the bulkhead. It's a large brown one with a locking ring type-of-thing. On advice from mechanic I need to keep this clean as when it was very dirty it gave me an inetermittent fuel pump problem.
So I have twisted, tugged and pulled but no luck. How on earth does one get this thing apart?

There isn't one of those metal clips around the plugs is there?

if its the roundish on behind the battery then it unscrews,if it has never been off it will be tight though & you may (carefully) have to use small water pump pliers to undo it.
