It's because the dampers and the springs are all tuned to each specific vehicle's dynamics, from road handling to weight distribution, height etc., so have to be specific. I just may be down to the limited numbers of the DS9 and not being economically viable to engineer an after-market alternative for the perceived demand.

Sorry to bother you again but I've had an idea.

The PHEV version has the active scan suspension, this is for a car with batteries weighing another 300kg+ depending on version. There originally was the E-tense 225hp but then they brought out an E-tense 250hp. i test drove an E-tense 225hp and the ride was great.

Could you estabish if the suspension for these cars was the same on the rear? i dont know if the active scan works across all 4 wheels or just the front.

If all 4 struts are different could you get me part numbers and prices please? I might at a push be able to get the dealer to fit this.

Not going to be an option because the DS9 active scan suspension uses a camera, body sensors, an ECU and 4 piloted shock absorbers.

There are 5 different setups for the DS9 and suffice it to say each have different part numbers for the dampers - but, this is where it gets complicated, so to simplify, there are several versions of struts for each of them

• 4 Driven Wheels (Piloted Struts)
• ICE Drive Train and Base Damping (normal struts)
• ICE Drive Train with Variable Damping (Piloted Struts)
• PHEV Drive Train with Base Damping and Non-4 Wheel Drive (Normal Struts)
• PHEV Drive Train with Variable Damping and non 4 Wheel Drive (Piloted Struts)

The piloted struts are again different (different part numbers) to each variant above and have sensors in the struts to link to the suspension ECU.

These therefore will not work or be of any benefit without the other control systems like the suspension ECU or AMVAR unit, the accelerometer sensors, the height sensors or the specific camera module, BSI programming etc. etc.

I'm also 99% sure that DS won't fit any incorrect parts to the vehicles, for reasons of indemnity and retrofitting all this kit probably isn't a realistic option given the integration into the vehicle.

So to sum up, even if you could get any of the piloted dampers fitted, they wouldn't work.

I'd all but given up the ghost on this, but out of nowhere I have just come across something.

A while back i posted this https://kyb-europe.com/blog/double-hydr ... termarket/ and these would all but certainly be my preferred choice over Bilstein's or Monroe's.

Low and behold they are listing 2 versions of the KYB's as being compatible. One of the number 3348037 is very close to the 3348033 as described in the C5 aircross article.

I have just emailed the seller to double check they are comptible....... and I'd love them to say yes.

But it's a no..... just as i wrote the last sentence I received an email back...... FFS

Just found out from the KYB catalogue the 3348037 and 3348038 fit the DS5.

I'm really not surprised, as online car parts are invariable incorrect because of all the variations for the different engines and setups, but I am glad they double-checked, to save you a lot of hassle and wasted time and cost for something that was never going to work.

These are just selling the same units from KYB which we already know are not compatible from the previous research.

Thanks. For the time being I'm just going to have to give up on this until something arises, which it may not. I don't know if my expectations are too high after test driving the ultra smooth PHEV version.

I don't know if I told you but I got the suepension checked out at a local independent garage a couple of months ago, and as part of that I took the mechanic for a drive to see what he thought. At first he couldnt believe it wasn't electric, and that was starting on an incline, and then he said he's been in an Audi A6 a fair bit and he thinks it rides very much like that. Could be the case but if I wanted an A6 ride then thats what i would have bought.

In the short term I'll take the internal side boot surrounds off and heavy sound deaden over the rear wheelarches, and put a bit behind the rear wings. Might even put a bit inside the bootlid too. Then perhaps a bit of closed cell foam over the boot floor which already has dodmat on.

At the front it's a bit more challenging, hardly no space under the bonnet, so might do the wheelarches myself or get someone to do it. i don't want to get too invasive and rip out the internal carpet so will just stay with the MLV under the floormats, and perhaps try and stuff some of that insulating wool stuff down behind the carpet under the glovebox and on the drivers side too.

Like I've said before I do think the noise makes it worse than it probably is, and making things quieter should have some placebo effect into making me think the suspension has improved. The car is sleek and double glazed so quiet in these areas.

Yes, I know what you mean - I've got it bad coming from Hydropneumatic and later Hydractive suspension on all my private cars since I was old enough to drive and now on springs and struts - totally bone-shaking, so at some point may have to go for the dual tube KYB progressive cushion alternative on the Aircross. The roads here are bloody awful as it is.

I'd definitely take the plunge if I were you, I could see the change being transformational. I do think the KYB's are a great bit of engineering and very cost effective considering the tech involved.
