B1811:96 Diesel fuel additive pump.

Post by 508Allure »

Just carried out a monthly scan of my 2017 3008 1.6 HDI with 90k miles and it had B1811:96 for a fault in diesel fuel additive pump showing as intermittent, which I haven't seen before.

I did have the orange spanner symbol illuminate a few weeks ago but it had disappeared by the next start and it wasn't accompanied by a message relating to low eolys, and neither was a message present when using the check control button. I can't remember if the car was low on fuel at the time or had just been filled up.

Is this likely a developing pump fault or low fluid as I have read of owners not always receiving a low fluid warning message? I must admit I had no idea the 3008 of this generation was even fitted with a DPF additive system.

Some PSA diesel vehicles have been fitted with particle filters for at least the 24 years.

This fault code means there's low DPF Eolys additive fluid in the tank, which is why the spanner is coming up when your refuel - as this is when the additive tank is trying to dose the fuel with the correct amount and may not have enough fluid to do this.

The Eolys fluid quantity remaining in the tank is not physically measured, it is estimated. The fact that you haven't had a warning yet, about the low fluid level may be that the tank level has previously been reset to clear a warning - but has not had any fluid actually put it - this happens a lot of times by unscrupulous individuals when moving on a vehicle or to clear a code for MOTs as an example.

If this was bought second hand you may not even be aware if this has been done.

As a consequence of the additive fluid running out, then this will affect the assisted regeneration of the particle filter, and therefore lead to clogging up of the particle filter if it cannot regenerate at lower exhaust gas temperatures afforded by the additive.

So you may now have 2 issues, one that the Eolys fluid is low or empty, and secondly that the particle filter is starting to clog as it can't regenerate.

Thank you Marc for the very detailed reply. I have owned plenty of diesels with DPF but not one with a DPF additive system or at least one I was aware of.

I don't suppose you would know which is the correct fluid for a 2017 3008 as I guess the next step will be to get the tank filled asap and the counter reset in the hope it's just low? I am assuming this generation of 3008 has the fixed tank rather than the additive pouch?

VIN: VF3**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff]

I will hook up my scanner and look for some live DPF data to ascertain its health.

Just took a look at the live data and it's showing the following:

Total weight of soot in particulate filter 18.523g

Total weight of additive in particulate filter 33g

Rate of clogging with cinders 34%

Additive amount in tank 263ml

Additive tank volume 1120ml

From the above I am guessing the DPF isn't clogged or at least full, the tank isn't empty and I will need a 1L refill kit as opposed to a 3L kit.

Ok so you need Powerflex additive for your 3008.

I wouldn't rely on the fluid volume remaining to be honest, as this may be well off if it has been reset without actually adding anything - as I mentioned before. But certainly get a minimum of 1Lt in which is the minimum officially recommended.

Don't forget you'll need to reset the additive counter in up to 2 places using a diagnostic tool.

Thanks Marc.

So can I assume my car has the fixed tank and based on the DPF info, do you think I am safe to drive it until I can get the tank refilled next week?

Don't suppose you remember the two places it will need resetting.

Thank you for the advice/info.

It can vary depending on system employed on the vehicle and the model. Some have to be reset to zero and others may require the volume refilled.

The operations will be somewhere in the engine ECU menu and / or one of the other menus from the repair menu I suspect.
