Audio unit Citroen C5 X7

Post by Ceenine »

Enquiring for a friend. The said friend has a 2012 6 cylinder model. Is the Continental RD45 model likely to suit his vehicle.

What do you mean by "suit"?

Are you asking about upgrades or what the vehicle is fitted with Don? - in which case we would need the VIN.

If the system is fitted with the RD45 then he will have bluetooth but no telematics.

If he needs navigation then there are options but all these require purchase of compatible screens, wiring, antennae, replacement fascia, aerial, fitting and configuration.

Replacement radio

Post by Ceenine »

I wonder could someone (eg someone who lives in West Wales) tell me whether the Continental rd45 is suitable as a replacement radio in a car with the vin VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff]
Thanks (enquiring for a friend)

Well not really as I would consider that a downgrade IMO! Your would basically be replacing a top of the range factory option (at the time the car was built) for an entry level radio and small monochrome screen. Apart from Bluetooth, there's nothing else that the RD45 offers and a lot it can't do.

The C5 you specified has a full telematics system already installed (RT4 Navidrive) with colour navigation, SIM-based built in telephone, voice commands, jukebox, full colour screen, SOS emergency and services calling etc. So although it is one of the first telematics systems and a little older now, I would consider an RD45 a downgrade. Apart from anything else, you would have to replace the fascia, change the wiring extensively, etc. Plus all the configuration changes needed to the BSI.

As the C5 also has front and rear parking assistance, there will likely be issues getting that to display on a much smaller EMF-C screen required for the RD45.

Thanks Marc, great help as always. As the friend lives in another state, I have not been able to familiarise myself with his car’s configuration. He told me the system doesn’t work, even the radio section and has never done so since he purchased the car second hand. From your description, the RT 4 system appears to be quite advanced at the time (2012) with quite advanced telematics. It would seem to be a difficult unit to source from a wrecking yard here and probably the same in the UK.

I believe the e-my way system in my car is very sensitive to heat and therefore there are many units in Australia that have failed. Fortunately Tasmania’s climate is quite temperate so there is a good chance that my unit should last the life of the car. Here’s hoping anyway. It does all I want it to do having the optional sub-woofer but not the reversing camera.

Well it's a bit odd having an RT4 on a 2012 C5 X7.... They were replaced shortly after the first models were released in 2008 in the UK with the NG4 Navidrive (Double DIN) unit in 2009 as the premium system. Then there was the MyWay system which was a less advanced telematic unit, then the eMyWay or RT6 unit as the main telematics units right up until near the production run, when the SMEG Touchscreen was used briefly.

So this must be an export version of the vehicle as I've never seen an RT4 in a later vehicle than a 2008 model. :-k

So Marc from your comments it would appear that if my friend was only interested in experiencing the stereo/radio capability (after all he has nothing at the moment) he may be able to buy the RD45 together with the small screen from the wreckers then use Diagbox to option it in?

Marc, my friend has just messaged me with the information that not only do the telematics in their entirety do not function, nor do the proximity sensors from and rear. Seems to me that there is something bigger which is not functioning. Maybe it needs a new engine fuse box (BM?) or something more fundamental. I wonder if my Diagbox may assist. Unfortunately he is in Victoria - a bit for for the leads to stretch.
Thanks

I'm not understanding Don; are you saying the specified C5 we are talking about has had the RT4 telematics equipment removed, as this is what is was fitted with at the factory?

It won't be that simple I suspect as the electrical harnesses will be different and the airbag ECU is connected to the telematic unit on the existing RT4, as this C5 does not have an independent telematic unit - it is handled by the RT4. So emergency services in event of collision will not function. Apart form the VIN coding, there will also need other parameters changed for the MFD and the RD45. The instrument matrix display may need parameters changing or you may end up with messages concerning 'Zone Not Mapped' on the display if the telematics are missing.

This makes more sense now.

In this case there will be something else going on for sure. I suspect either the wiring, fuses or other possibility like somebody has installed some other equipment incorrectly or cut the CAN wiring somewhere.

Without knowing more I can't advise, but the fault codes would certainly give some pointers.

I shall have a quick look at the electric diagram for this car and see if there is anything in common with the circuits that he can check.....

Ok, so one other thing I forgot to mention is tha this C5 also has the Equaliser Amplifier fitted, which means another load of wiring connectors to and from the equaliser Amp unit. If anything has been changed here this would obviously affect the telematics unit and the parking assistance sound.

First thing I would do is focus on Fuses. In the BSI in the passenger glovebox, check Fuse F14 which is responsible for: Hands-free car kit - hifi amplifier relay - Parking assistance - passenger´s seat memorisation control unit - trailer fuse box ECU - rain/sunlight sensor - lateral trajectory monitoring.

I would replace it rather than checking as you cannot determine if it's blown with a visual check alone.

Also check the SHUNT fuse is in the correct position as if this has been removed for checking at some point, it can easily be re-inserted in the other position which results in 'Park' mode, which switches off a lot of consumer equipment, including the telematics, which is used when the car will be in storage or parked up for a long time to conserve battery power by switching off power-consuming equipment.

Look at the lower row of fuses (you'll need a torch to read the fuse number writing on the black plastic surrounds) and look for the 'FSH' or SHUNT fuse. Consult the manual and check the position. It should be in CST / Customer Mode position.

Marc, excellent advice there.

I believe the unit is original and fitted to all “Exclusive “ models in Australia around the 2012 period.
